Yes, you can. When you buy a new hard drive, you can go to the manufacturer's site and download their hard drive utility. I'm familiar with Western Digital, for example.

They have their Digital Lifeguard tools. Usually what you do is you use the tool to make a CD that you boot the computer off of. You install the second hard drive inside your PC (you might have to buy SATA cables) or install it in an external hard drive enclosure.

You boot from the CD and tell lit to clone your hard drive. The software will make an exact clone of your hard drive, complete with boot sectors, all your software, Windows, and everything. You can then switch out the hard drives, and make keep the old one for backup or use it to store stuff on.

So it's probably 95% sure that everything will work well, but not 100%. I did it recently, transferinig a 160 gb HD to a 1 gb HD. You're not copying the HD, you're cloning it!

As long as you boot off a CD and don't go through Windows, you clone the disk.It might take a couple of hours, but that's why the utility is there. People swap disks all the time.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
