I actually tried to address this very question (not covering Blogger though) in a blog post that I made, so I'll just copy that post here (long read): 'I find that as many people are moving to shorter updates through social networks and other forms of sharing, the Tumblr vs. Posterous debate will be one to look out for as they garner more users who either formally used traditional blogs or have never written a blog post at all. Both of these platforms have some interesting features and differences, and below I will outline some of the pros, cons, and things you might be interested in if you are considering using one (or both) of these microblogging services. ______________________________________________________________________________ Tumblr descibes itself as the “Easiest Way To Blog†and does an excellent job with it’s landing page promoting said description. In Tumblr, one posts an update by using the dashboard, which is separated to create posts in categories such as Text, Photo, Quote, Link, Chat, Audio or Video.
Most are exactly what they sounds like, for instance ‘Chat’ is setup for you to input a conversation you had with someone, and with ‘Video’ you can either upload one of your own videos or just copy the video’s link (such as on YouTube). Tumblr finds most of it’s userbase focusing on Photos (by a large margin), small Text updates and Quotes, and occasionally other forms of content. Any of these updates can be reblogged, which is essentially sharing any content you find on someone’s Tumblr on your own Tumblr, very similar to ‘ReTweeting.
€™ Things To Consider --------------------------- o The userbase is typically younger than Posterous o The content is usually limited to various forms of media with small (or no) text descriptions o Many Tumblr pages are focused, that is they post content on specific themes o Although there are no ‘Comments’ on Tumblr, most themes can use Disqus for comments on posts Now let’s go over some Pros and Cons specifically for Tumblr Pros ------ + Simplicity, a theme for both platforms + Photo content is excellent (other users share and reblog a lot of excellent photos) + Very customizable + Variety of themes offered makes for great portfolio service, website, etc. Cons ------- - Reblogging can result in repitition of content - Many of the themes are not sleek, and at their worst can resemble a bad MySpace page ______________________________________________________________________________ And now we move on to Tumblr’s biggest competitor... Posterous’s landing page also promotes a service of simplicity, with easy sign up and an emphasis on ‘On The Go’ posting, highlighting the service’s abilities to post content via emails. While Tumblr also has ways to share content, Posterous positions itself to be the easiest way to ‘Autopost’ to all of your other accounts, be they blogs or social networking services. Posterous offers a large variety of other sites that your content can be auto-posted to.
This means that any time you update your Posterous with a new blog post, all of your other sites will notify your followers of your new blog post (shortlinks included for sites with character limits like Twitter). As aforementioned, Posterous can also organize a new post via email, including photos and videos. Things To Consider --------------------------- o Audience is typically older than Tumblr o Content is focused more on text/photos as a combination o Service is focused on mobility and being able to blog from anywhere o Service is focused on ‘Lifestreaming’ by updating all of your other accounts Pros ------ + Ability to post anywhere through a variety of ways, especially email, makes this great for posting wherever + Deafault themes are very sleek and clean looking + Ability to Auto-post to all networks makes sharing content truly easy + Subscribers to your Posterous can be updated via email, and you can import your email contact list Cons ------- - Not very customizable, default themes offer limited customization in their options - At the moment, no support for AdSense and a smaller userbase Well, that’s a wrap, hopefully I’ve been able to clear up some questions you may have had about either service while remaining objective.
______________________________________________________________________________ Concluding, I personally feel that their is an opportunity to use both well. Tumblr is best used for customizing your page, and for sharing pictures and short updates like no other as it lets you display the content on the page rather than through a link like on Twitter. Posterous is also an excellent service for posting on the go via email, and and is best for maintaining a more traditional style blog than can update to all of your other sites so your reader can instantly know about your content when it is posted.
