We're going in early September. We're thinking we'll take one of those battlefield tours where the guide drives your car. What else might be good, other than ghost tours?
As far as restaurants, we're interested in either casual or fine dining. Atmosphere is nice but quality of the food is more important. Asked by Sardis 41 months ago Similar questions: give recommendations things places Gettysburg Games & Leisure > Travel.

I didn't find the battlefields very interesting but... I found Eisenhower’s home and farm fasinating! Eisenhower National storic Site is the home and farm of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Located adjacent to the Gettysburg Battlefield, the farm served the President as a weekend retreat and a meeting place for world leaders. With its peaceful setting and view of South Mountain, it was a much needed respite from Washington and a backdrop for efforts to reduce Cold War tensions. I guess cuz I am a woman, I never found battles and dates interesting.
I have always been interested in how people lived. Don’t miss the Eisenhower National Sources: my experience DandyDear711's Recommendations The Eisenhowers Gettysburg's First Family Used from: $22.22 Cooking Favorites - Recipes From Employees and Friends of Gettysburg National Military Park and Eisenhower National storic Site Used from: $4.75 I have not read these but they look interesting! .
I live in PA, but I haven't been to Gettysburg for along time... and i’m not sure how long you are going to be there, so here are some possibilities they may involve some travel by car in the area. The Ghost Tour that you are referring to is supposed to be voted the Best Ghost Tour in America ghostsofgettysburg.com/ After reading this, I now want to go on this! I hope you have fun and witness something paranormal!
A few years ago, I took the tour in York of the Harley-Davidson plant and LOVED it. harley-davidson.com/wcm/content/pages/fa... they offer tours on Mon-Fri 9-2pm on a first come first serve basis, and Saturdays 9:30-1pm thru Aug 23rd, but since your going in Sept, you might want to call, toll free: 1-877-883-1450 I have head good things about O’Rorkes Restaurant. We don’t eat out very often, if we do, it’s usually those Mom and Pop drive-in places, or Stewart’s if possible: but here’s the directions: http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&q=restaurants&near=Gettysburg,+PA&fb=1&;view=text&cd=28&hl=en&attrid=&latlng=39823374,-77231665,12096247184565028971&ei=3OJ9SJPjJZGMqwKqu7yKDQ There are also all kinds of fast food type places for a quick lunch, such as Pizza Hut and Denny's.PA has great pretzels!
If interested go to the Lititz Pretzel House, it’s a bit of a distance from Gettysburg, but if you’re hungry after all your ghost hunting they are located at 219 E. Main St.Lititz, PA: http://www.juliussturgis.com/ they even make pretzels shaped out of horse & buggies! While cruising the area, please be careful of the Pa.
Dutch Amish horse and buggies; they may not have the slow moving vehicle sign on their buggy, and they do not allow you to take pictures of them.(You could always ask first) but purchase postcards instead. You might want to visit a Farmer’s Market, they are the best for lunch of fresh fruit and baked goods!(and soft pretzels--yum) have fun! http://www.ororkespub.com/ Sources: Official PA Dutch Guide-Book/google images .
Gettysburg We went to Gettysburg for a few days a couple of years ago. Stayed at the Comfort Inn which is not remotely luxurious but was clean and cheap and the wi-fi works, which was more than you can say of some places. First things first: It’s a BIG place because the battle took 3 days and it was all around the town. It’s not one big battlefield, it’s a half dozen big ones and a bunch more small ones.
If you aren’t familiar with the basic story it would be a good idea to do some research first so that you understand how the battle developed. The quick and dirty way would be to read Michael Shaara’s "Killer Angels" and watch the movie "Gettysburg", preferably with a battlefield map handy to get a handle on what took place where and when. Visitor Center & tours: The first place to hit when you get there.
They just opened the new one which was under construction when we were there. It is supposed to be very impressive. You can buy all the usual souvenir junk but they also have a wide selection of maps and other artwork.
You can buy self guided tour books or the self guided tour CD which is what we did. Just pop the CD in your player and follow along on the map as you drive around the area. You can, quite literally, take the full three days to do the self guided tour or you can pick and choose your spots.
We took two days and didn’t hit everything. There are several observation towers which are worth the climb but the best overall view is from Little Round Top. There are small and large bus tours with commentators or you can hire a guide to ride around with you which more personal but also more expensive.
And the guided tours will only hit a small fraction of the sites available. Food & Drink: The Pub & Restaurant is right on the square in the middle of town. Food, beer selection and service were excellent and prices were reasonable for a tourist trap town.
About a half block west of the square on Chambersburg Street is The Blue Parrot Bistro which was also excellent. The Appalachian Brewing Company on Buford Avenue is at the Northwest corner of town on Seminary Ridge. They brew their own (very good) beer and the food and service were excellent.
Gettysbrew Restaurant and Pub on Hunterstown Road (Northeast of town) is historic and picturesque but their home brewed beer was only average and the food likewise. 1 DandyDear: i'm glad that you stated that about the battlefields, I didn't find them particularly interesting either, I liked your idea about the Eisenhower house. As for the restaurant that I recommended, I haven't eaten there myself, but was told by my friend who was working down there for a bit that it was good.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
