Can you recommend any books like An Unpardonable Crime by Andrew Taylor? See details?

See details. I just finished reading An Unpardonable Crime by Andrew Taylor, it was set in early 19th century England. Does anyone have any books they'd recommend that are also set in the same time period that are either mystery or romance types that still hold true to historical facts?

I'm not looking for the Amazon rec's but ones you have actually read that you thought were really good. One of the things I really like about this book, was that it wasn't predictable, I didn't have the ending figured out half way through, like I do with a lot of books I read. Since I've read this book, I'm in a bit of a 19th century England mindset and would enjoy another book set in that time period, but it doesn't have to be set in England.

I also read "An Unpardonable Crime" -- here are some novels of similar character I'm a big 19th century fan, so here are some of my favorite modern books that are set during the period: 1. Possession by A.S. Byatt -- one of my all-time favorite books. The novel begins in the 20th century when a young literary researcher discovers some letters by a famous 19th century poet.

These letters reveal that the poet may have had a romantic affair that was previously unknown. As the novel progresses and the researcher discovers more clues about the poet's life, there are increasingly detailed flashbacks to the 19th century, until by the end the novel really focuses on the 19th century characters. The writing is masterful, and the story both romantic and powerful.2.

The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl -- this is a murder mystery set in 19th century Boston which involves a number of famous characters, most notably Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Having lived for a number of years in and around Boston, I appreciated the author's attention to detail. The mystery, which revolves around Longfellow's translation of Dante's Inferno, is engaging and includes a number of unexpected twists and turns.3.

The Crimson Petal and the White by Michael Faber -- this novel is a Victorian tour-de-force set in mid-19th century London. It follows the exploits of a wealthy businessman and his illicit affair with a poor but smart girl from the streets. The book is long (nearly 900 pages) and a bit slow at times, but ultimately worth the read.

England, but just after World War I marissa, I have fallen in love with a new-ish series by Jacqueline Winspear. The first in the series is named after the main character, Maisie Dobbs. It is really, really good, thought-provoking, good characters, good sense of place and time, and well-written.

Here is the first journal review quoted by Amazon: "Adult/gh School-Maisie is 14 when her mother dies, and she must go into service to help her father make ends meet. Her prodigious intellect and the fact that she is sneaking into the manor library at night to read Hume, Kierkegaard, and Jung alert Lady Rowan to the fact that she has an unusual maid. She arranges for Maisie to be tutored, and the girl ultimately qualifies for Cambridge.

She goes for a year, only to be drawn by the need for nurses during the Great War. After serving a grueling few years in France and falling in love with a young doctor, Maisie puts up a shingle in 1929 as a private investigator. She is a perceptive observer of human nature, works well with all classes, and understands the motivations and demons prevalent in postwar England.

Teens will be drawn in by her first big case, seemingly a simple one of infidelity, but leading to a complex examination of an almost cultlike situation. The impact of the war on the country is vividly conveyed. A strong protagonist and a lively sense of time and place carry readers along, and the details lead to further thought and understanding about the futility and horror of war, as well as a desire to hear more of Maisie.

This is the beginning of a series, and a propitious one at that. " I strongly recommend Maisie to you, marissa! .

Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle I admit freely that I am not breaking new ground here, but the many short stories and several novels involving the interplay of Sleuth Sherlock Holmes and his co-detective Dr Watson cannot be beaten, and set you firmly in England in the 19th Century! If you have read no Doyle, he is the real thing. He was a doctor, and a better than average sleuth himself.

Some say modern forensic science began with these stories. I recommend "The Hound of the Baskervilles" to begin, a real thrilling page turner! 1 Well thanks heaps, Marissa! Just when I swear I won't add any more books to my TBR pile until I've depleted it a little, you go and give me another title to add to it. What kind of a friend are you anyway?!

LMAO .

Perhaps I should add some of the titles to my TBR pile.

" "Looking for a books name. " "Books" "about books..." "Which books did you buy?" "Tell me why I should buy your books" "Do you ever read comic books? If so, what do you recommend?

" "Where can I find these two books?" "Can you recommend some good books for a 3-year-old? " "Can anyone recommend books similar to "The Thirteenth Tale"? Something like the Bronte books...

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
