Can you suggest some titles of some humorous books with happy endings. I would like to read a book with humor and happy endings, published in the past 10 years, suitable for book club sharing. Am tired of dark, violent books with struggling characters.

Humorous books... Bill Bryson is a fabulous author...writes a lot about his travels. Many times while reading parts of his books, I would laugh out loud... Perhaps you might want to check out his website: randomhouse.com/features/billbryson/ .
OMG! I tell everyone this: David Sedaris' Me Talk Pretty One Day. It is the most entertaining and downright funny book I have EVER read.
Now, I love books like Running with Scissors and A million Little Pieces etc. , but this is by far one of my favorites and without the unhappy ending. Keep in mind, it does have a collection of stories but tells a big one in the long run.SO GOOD! GO, get it NOW!

I know what you mean! When did "literature" start having to be so bleak? I just finished a book that might be perfect for you. It’s a real hoot and a half, with a charming ending.
And it just happens to have book club discussion questions in the back. The book is, "Good in Bed," by Jennifer Weiner. I found this book in a thrift shop, and after I finished it, I went out and bought two more that she wrote because I enjoyed this one so much.
You might be tempted to dismiss it as just a piece of fluff, because it's so entertaining and it makes you laugh out loud. But the author does deal with some serious issues--namely, how women's self-images are affected and shaped by society. I really liked the fact that the larger woman who is the heroine of the story didn't diet and get thin in order to find love and happiness.
I kept hoping she wouldn't, because I felt it would be a sell-out. And she didn't. She learned to accept herself.
I think that that's a very positive message for all of us. (Interestingly enough, in the afterward, the author talked about some of the difficulties in making the book into a movie. Apparently the studio execs had a problem with a "real" large woman playing the part--not that there were, as the author pointed out, very many larger actresses working in Hollywood today.
) Below is the review from Amazon. I hope that if you choose this book you like it as much as I did! From Publishers Weekly It is temping at first but unwise to assume Candace Shapiro is yet another Bridget Jones.
Feisty, funny and less self-hating than her predecessor, Cannie is a 28-year-old Philadelphia Examiner reporter preoccupied with her weight and men, but able to see the humor in even the most unpleasant of life's broadsides. Even she is floored, however, when she reads "Good in Bed," a new women's magazine column penned by her ex-boyfriend, pothead grad student Bruce Guberman. Three months earlier, Cannie suggested they take a break apparently, Bruce thought they were through and set about making such proclamations as, "Loving a larger woman is an act of courage in our world.
" Devastated by this public humiliation, Cannie takes comfort in tequila and her beloved dog, Nifkin. Bruce has let her down like another man in her life: Cannie's sadistic, plastic surgeon father emotionally abused her as a young girl, and eventually abandoned his wife and family, leaving no forwarding address. Cannie's siblings suffer, especially the youngest, Lucy, who has tried everything from phone sex to striptease.
Their tough-as-nails mother managed to find love again with a woman, Tanya, the gravel-voiced owner of a two-ton loom. Somehow, Cannie stays strong for family and friends, joining a weight-loss group, selling her screenplay and gaining the maturity to ask for help when she faces something bigger than her fears. Weiner's witty, original, fast-moving debut features a lovable heroine, a solid cast, snappy dialogue and a poignant take on life's priorities.
This is a must-read for any woman who struggles with body image, or for anyone who cares about someone who does. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc. _____________________________________________________________________________________ If you like animals, especially dogs, and you like low-key "slice of life" stories, you might like "The New Yorkers," by Cathleen Schine.
I thought it was very sweet and enjoyed it a lot, but then I'm from NY, and I love animals. I liked all the different characters in this story. One of the Amazon reviews said it was like peeking into a bunch of windows to see how they all lived and interacted.
This book, also, would make a very good movie. (A "chick flick," no doubt, but a good one!) If your group likes this sort of thing, I think it would be a good book club choice. From Publishers Weekly Schine dispatches a love letter to New Yorkers and the dogs who own them in her seventh novel (after She Is Me), an ensemble novel centered on an Upper West Side street.
Jody, a lonely 39-year-old musician/music teacher who's lived in the same rent-controlled studio since college, rescues a pit bull mix named Beatrice from the ASPCA. After eight months of blissful pet ownership, Jody bumps into divorced 50-year-old Everett while walking Beatrice and falls in love with the stranger after he shoots her a smile. George, a 28-year-old waiter, moves into the neighborhood when his younger sister, Polly, rents an apartment in Everett's building and acquires the puppy left behind by the last tenant.
(He hanged himself; she names the pup Howdy.) Down the street live Simon, a reclusive social worker whose only joy in life is foxhunting, and Doris, an embittered, prep-school guidance counselor with no love lost for pooches. Orbits slowly begin to overlap as winter gives way to spring and then the summer of the 2003 blackout—an event that sends a few characters in unexpected directions. It may not play as well west of the Hudson, but the hometown dog-run crowd will find this heartfelt tribute curiously endearing.(May) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc.
