Can you use henna to dye or color your hair?

The only chemical in henna that is capable of dying your hair is called Lawsonia Inermis. This chemical is a reddish brown color, and will change the color of your hair to a reddish brown color. Henna is involved in other hair colors too, but another agent is introduced to the henna base in order to change your color.

Like any hair color, it is not completely permanent. The color will begin to fade after a few weeks, and of course, new hair roots are not going to have the imitation color. If you want another color, there are compound henna dye's that you can find on the market.

Some attempt to say they are 100% henna, but as I mention above, only one color of hair dye can come from henna. As for your question, whether you can use henna tattoo ink to color your hair, it has been done. The powder used to make the surface tattoos can be mixed with lemon juice to make a hair dye.

But again, unless another color is introduced other than the henna, you will not get a variety of colors, just a dark red.
