Absolutely. One of our 'hanging judges' needed fresh underwear every time he passed a death sentence. Says it all, no?
The evidence is close to overwhelming: there’s no deterrent effect, there are finite chances of killing innocent people, Heaven alone knows what sort of damage it causes to the people involved ... and that’s just a few pickings from the evidence. As far as the values of a civilisation are concerned, there is something deeply disturbing about the sight of apparently civilised (and even religiously committed) people in the act of baying for blood. Over the last couple of days I’ve been reading some of the comments on capital punishment written by evangelical Christians, and so help me I’ve found more than one who’s prepared to justify the possibility of innocent people being killed to serve the broader purpose.
Many of the opinion polls quoted (in different countries) in support of capital punishment are in fact skewed; if the alternative of life-means-life imprisonment is offered, the proportion of people in favour of capital punishment drops very significantly. I’m old enough (just) to remember the sense of collective shame felt here when Derek Bentley was hanged: he had the intelligence of a child and was actually in custody when the shots were fired ... every one of them by his accomplice. The death sentence was administered by a judge who lived in a house called Truncheons, and whose clerk always brought him a fresh pair of trousers and underpants when there was a death sentence to be passed.
I think that says it all, really.
But of course it is. How can you punish someone by committing the same crime against them? It's the criminal *justice* system, not the revenge system.
And until guilt can be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, I'd rather 1000 guilty people be freed than a single innocent person be murdered. In one word "NO" If one commites a horrific crime then that person needs to pay w/ there own life. I think child sex offenders, serial murderers, and adult sex offenders, child abusers need to be done away with. I see no need to keep them in prison and we have to pay to keep them there.
Classic example why is charlie manson still alive? How much of the tax payers money has it taken to keep him afloat? For what good?
Our jails and prisons are sooo over run w/ these creeps. Why do they do it? They know what their doing and more than half of them have already been in prison.
Mabe if we took them out of the court room, after they were found guilty, to the gallows behind the court house and getter done. Mabe they would think about it before hand. Lets send them to where ever they are spending eternity Thats one ticket to ride I would gladly pay!.
Yes If it's legalized there is laws broken. I would say it would be punishement other than murder. Of course, the death penalty is given out freely. It depends on the degree of the murder.
Was there torture involved, how many people were murdered, and the suffering of the victim(s). In fact, people who rape and murder children should be treated in the same manner. Criminals can't stop themselves, therefore a blight on society.
I don't think civilized nations has anything to do with this. It's carrying out justice. Would you want justice if a person brutalized your loved and your entire family?
What say you, when it hits home? .
No, I disagree. If we were a civilised people, your argument may have merit. But we're not, and capital punishment is a necessary evil.
Many people would say that the death penalty does not serve as a deterrent to crime, but I think that is because most places have such a watered down version of capital punishment that it has lost it's effectiveness. Bring back speedy trials, limited or no appeals, and public hangings, and see how much the murder rate drops. Sources: my opinion .
If there is no exscuse for murder, and Capital punishment is what you think should be done, what happens in a case when.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
