CAT CLAWS...do you have to trim your cats' toenails?

Over the years, we've had many, many cats....which have mostly lived indoors....This is the first litter that I've ever had to cut their claws. They're 10 years old. They have scratching posts and the cardboard scratching pads, which they use faithfully (while we're watching) and do a number on the corner of the couch while we sleep Cats.

It depends................ I trim the claws of my cats if they stay indoors. I don't trim the claws of my cats it they go outside. Right now I have two cats, at both stay inside where I currently am staying, so I trim their claws.At my previous, and future, home the male cat went outside, so I didn't trim his claws.

They both use the scratching post. It is the kind with rope-type cord around the center post, and a top and bottom platform. I chose not to trim the male cat's claws as he needed claws to defend himself.

The amount of time between trimmings varies, and depends on the individual cat. Sources: personal experience .

We do... We adopted our cat from Animal Rescue in Maryland. They REQUIRED us not to get the cat declawed. They said they would take her away from us if we ever did.

We have moved to many states since then and they have followed us every step of the way. So we do trim her nails about once per month. She is about 9 years old now and tolerates it.

She will complain a bit but it is all show. My husband holds her and I trim. This is not a great arrangement because I have no depth perception but we get it done.

I did cut the claws on one of my male cats some years ago, but ever since he died I have regretted holding him down to do it - just because he was snagging the furniture. I’d had him from a tiny kitten and he died at 19½. I still regret having to put him to sleep but kidneys were failing and I had to be kind.
