Classical Music: Do you have a favorite Rachmaninoff composition?

I've just come from hearing a fantastic work of Rachmaninoff's that I don't think I've ever heard before:LONDON label - Suite No. 2 for two pianos, Opus 1w/V. AshkenazyAll I can say is "WOW"!

I really need to explore more of his works. One other amazing work is the Symphonic Dances, for two pianos, with Margaret Argarich. Asked by goldie080 35 months ago Similar questions: Classical Music favorite Rachmaninoff composition Entertainment > Music > Music Styles.

Love classical! One of my all time favorites of his is his piano concerto no. 2.

I also like his cello sonata, piano concerto no. 3, Lento in D minor, and his piano sonata no. 1.

I like most of his works, but these are definitely my favorites Video This is the piano concerto no. 2. Quite good, isn't it?.

Oh! Rachmaninoff! I'm so glad you like Symphonic Dances!

It's one of my favorites as well. I'm a lover of ballet and although (to my feeble knowledge) Symphonic Dances has not been utilized by a choreographer, there have been many, many rumors and rumblings over the decades. I especially like how Rachmaninoff refers or alludes to his previous works in Symphonic Dances.

Many regard it as a 'summing-up' of his career as a composer. Coming in as Op. 45 in 1940, it was indeed his last composition.

I'm betting the most popular Rachmaninoff is going to be Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (Op. 43). While he never specifically wrote a ballet score, no fewer than three major choreographers have set ballets to this work: Fokine (Covent Garden Russian Ballet, London, 1939), Lavravsky (Bolshoi Ballet, Moscow, 1960), and Ashton (Royal Ballet, London, 1980).

When I listen to Paganini it just sounds like a Hollywood score to me. Of the 24 variations that make up this work, #18 has been pumped like a bicycle by Hollywood. It's one of those melodies that everyone knows but probably are unaware of the origin. So dear goldie080, I'd love to share a snippet of Rachmaninoff that I love.

To me it is inseparable from the dance. The muses must have been smiling when this was created - and the music and the dance were meant only for each other. The ballet is a pas de deux entitled "Spring Waters" and is only about two minutes long.

The music by Rachmaninoff is from Spring Torrents Op. 14 #11. The choreography is by Assaf Meserer.

This grainy video is from about 1956 with Maria Bylova and Leonid Nikonov from the Bolshoi. I have three: the second of his piano concertos/symphonies & Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini Like with most of the great composers, it's impossible for me to pick "a" favorite. Were someone to hold a gun to my head, and demand I choose just one, or else, would most likely choose his 2nd symphony, depending on my mood at the moment: love that piece. Don't believe I've ever heard an arrangement of his 'Symphonic Dances' for two pianos; pretty sure I would prefer the orchestral version.

You sound as if you're probably a well-versed, classical music lover; so you may be familiar with my recommendation. In case you aren't, then his symphonic poem 'Isle of the Dead' might prove worth your investigation. It's a rarely performed work, and so a good recording of it will probably be very difficult to come by.

The best I can recall ever hearing, was by the Philidelphia Orchestra with Eugene Ormandy. But that was many years ago, and it's most probably no longer available. Video http://ru.youtube.com/watch?v=bszAvKbO3Zk .

I've just been listening to Dvorak's String Quartet No. 13, op.106, and it's a beauty! Very well played by the Prague Quartet, on Deutsche Grammophon label.

What is also charming is his "Cypresses" work. ;-) Asked by goldie080 30 months ago Similar questions: Classical Music favorite Dvorak composition Entertainment > Music > Music Styles.

Without a doubt - his 7th Symphony... Best recording in my opinion - Chicago.

Dvorák's 9th. Symphony ''From the New World' is always recognized by me. It is as fine as Rachmaninoff 2e pianoconcert. In Summer we have a lot of Music Festivals on Spain's Costa Brava.

In Torroella the Montgrí - the village I live in for more than 28 years already - the complete program of concerts is very well balanced. But funny enough: never any work of Antonín Dvorák has been programmed until now. The 'New World' symphony is one of those works that I don't listen to: I really live along with it.

From my youth on I was introduced in the world of classical music by one of my older brothers Noud. He was engaged with a teacher of art and the two of them meant a lot in my life. The complete Arends-family in the Fifties.

My mother loved a Belgian/Flemish radio-program of Opera-music on Sundays and that worked exactly the other way around with me. My wife Carmen cured my prejudices by a duet from 'Tosca', sung by Jaume Aragall and an Argentinean Soprano during the Festival. It happened in the Gothic Church. I sang every Sunday in the Parochial Choir until my voice 'broke', a normal thing in a boy's life.

I also had a friend who played the piano and was very talented. He taught me a lot about Hungarian music and gave me two LP-records of Bela Bartok after one of his many trips to Budapest. He studied French at the Utrecht University and his thesis was about the influence of French on the Hungarian literature.

He married a Hungarian woman in Budapest and became temporarily a happy man. I wonder if I now would be able to play works of Dvorák on the piano. The music I like most is written by J.S. Bach.

The real dream that once in my life I would be able to play 'Das Wohltemperierte Klavier' came out for a little part. Now I have many L.P. Records, tapes and CD's of this genius. And the priest of the church let me play the organ where I indeed managed to play themes of Bach in an empty church during the week.

Thanks to my friend Frans ('Ferenç' in Hungarian) I learned to listen to Sergey Rachmaninoff Second Piano Concert, such a beauty that I am looking now for a CD. Where Svjatislav Richter, the Ukrainian piano-genius plays this concert, the second one on the list of my beloved works. I also love Italian Baroque Music, especially Vivaldi, Sammartini and Corelli.

In fact I love all kinds of music with the exception of 'rap'.'Rap is rubbish' for my wife Carmen and me. If you like to know a bit more about the village and the Music Festival, go to the website of the Townhal: http://www.torroella.org On the first page on the right you will read 'Tourism English'. 1 Symphony #9 "Journey to the New World" is my favorite. Maybe not his best, but it's the thought that counts, and I believe he wrote that for America.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
