1 Yes, I love, love, love Shubert! I'm not sure what is my favorite piece, but I'm totally in love with this right now, even though it is Faure', NOT Shubert. Sicilienne.

Allegretto molto moderato Gabriel Fauré. Please listen to this piece if you can and tell me what you think.

2 For me it's the B flat minor piano sonata - I remember the first time I encountered it, and sight-reading the second movement through tears, it's so beautiful. And how interesting that both Schubert and Shostakovich revisited Beethoven in their very last works - I'm thinking of how in the viola sonata Shostakovich takes the Moonlight sonata and can't bear to let it go (if you don't know it, approach with care; the blind genius is one side the river and the deaf genius the other, but one's very aware of the river). I recorded that piece ages ago (no way could I play it now) and I've lost the tape, dammit, and the only person who might have a copy of it has stowed it in his loft.

I'm always stunned at the last three sonatas - he wrote them in about three weeks, and frankly I reckon it would take that long to copy out the manuscript, let alone go through the act of composition. Amazing stuff.
