I use XP. Could I transfer/copy/backup entire hard drive with programs, softwares, drivers to another/new hard drive? For example, my old computer or notebook has many softwares, applications, programs, utilities, drivers, etc. In the old hard drive, and if I want another new and bigger hard drive or new computer and I still want to use and transfer these existing programs/softwares to new hard drive, is it possible.
I notice that files and folders are very easy to transfer, but even Firedogs and some transfer geeks from Bestbuy, Circuitcity do not offer to transfer programs! , but only files. Please help me.
I always want to buy a new and better notebook than my current one, but because I do not know how to transfer my entire hard drive to another computer, I still have to use my old notebook. Thank you very much. By the way, I use XP.

Yes Yes, you can. Some of the hard drive manufacturers have software that will do this. Maxtor used to, but they are now owned by Seagate and I do not know what the new software situation is like with them.
Norton Ghost (symantec.com/themes/ghost/index.jsp) is supposed to work well as a way to copy the entire contents from one drive to another. It works by copying the image of the hard drive.
Use Windows Built in Files and settings transfer wizard Click on Start, goto all programs, then accessories, then system tools, and then you should see "files and settings transfer wizard" follow the instructions and you'll be set.
Easiest & Best Symantec produces a program known as Ghost which is design with what you want in mind. I've done this exact same process several times with no ill effects. I highly recommend it for ease of use and functionality.

Yes! Check out programs like: Norton Ghost They create one single file you could store on the new drive (or CD/DVD) and when you "open" them on the new drive -- EVERYTHING you set to transfer will be restored. I use to reformat my computer every few months.
Using Norton Ghost - I reformatted and burned the "clean image" to DVD.. so rather than going thru the whole re-install process of all my programs - I just used that one DVD to return it to the "freshly reformatted" state. It works really well! .
The answer is yes and no. I have an Compaq Presario that I installed another hard drive in to use as a backup in case the original drive fails. It makes an "image" of the hard drive so it looks just like the main hard drive with all the programs and data the main drive has.
All I do is run this one line program which I named HardDriveCopy. Bat Here it is: xcopy C:\*. * /E /D /R /H /Y /C G:\ My main drive is C: and my backup drive is G: However I bought a new Compaq Presario and tried to do the same thing and it would not let me do it.
Either Windows XP or the BIOS blocked me form switching the hard drive that was originally installed in the computer to another one. I suspect it was Microsoft trying to keep me from reusing a program on a new computer that I already bought. I also have a laptop which I have had to reformat and install everything twice on and I bought an external USB hard drive that came with back up software for just that purpose. It hasn't crashed again so I don't know if it is going to work or not, but I hope so.
The big worry is that Windows XP will be prevented from running by Microsoft's activation scheme which is a real problem. If that happens you can call Microsoft and plead your case and they may activate Windows XP if you can suffer through the hours on the phone. I think my next computer is going to be a Mac.

What is a good external hard drive to transfer files from a PC (XP) to a new Mac Mini (OS X.5.6).

Can you use a external hard drive to backup a dvr.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
