Professor Forni, who started ... the civility movement, suggests 25 rules for considerate conduct: 1. Pay attention.2. Acknowledge others.

3. Think the best. 4.

Listen.5. Be inclusive. 6.

Speak kindly. 7. Don't speak ill.8.

Accept and give praise. 9. Respect even a subtle "no.

" 10. Respect others' opinions.11. Mind your body.

12.Be agreeable. 13. Keep it down (and rediscover silence).14.

Respect other people's time. 15. Respect other people's space.

16. Apologize earnestly.17. Assert yourself.

18. Avoid personal questions. 19.

Care for your guests.20. Be a considerate guest. 21.

Think twice before asking for favors. 22. Refrain from idle complaints.23.

Accept and give constructive criticism. 24. Respect the environment and be gentle to animals.

25. Don't shift responsibility and blame. If all Askvillers pledged to "choose civility", and to remind each other of our pledge, could we improve our interactions with each other here in Askville?

Be kind and be kind and be kind It was Henry James that gave us a mantra which I try very hard to apply every minute of my life. He said "Three things in human life are important. The first is to be kind.

The second is to be kind. The third is to be kind. " I keep this quotation hanging on a wall in the kitchen because as hard as I try I still know that I need to be reminded.

I am human after all and I am not always kind. Or as kind as I wish to be, or as kind as I ought to be. It is almost as concise to me, as Jesus restating the Ten Commandments with the two.

Love God and love one another and helps define the need in humanity to care for one another regardless of religious belief, upbringing or lack thereof. But this isn't all about me. :-) I personally think it's a wonderful prescription for healthy living regardless of where you reside.

Here in Askville or in any other online community you do have one thing that you don't have in the outside world and that is anonymity. But even if others don't know who you are - you do indeed know your own self. If one is unkind to others, one is perhaps equally unkind to themselves.

Great question! I have taken a back seat on Askville for the past week or so but someone forwarded this question to me. It’s the first one I’ve seen in a long time that has piqued my interest.

I read the article that you referenced and am impressed with Forni’s simple, yet so wise strategy for civility. I think if we followed even a few of his suggestions, that Askville could be a much more pleasant community. From the article I particularly liked this: " which fit on a bookmark, make civility seem attainable.

They are short: "pay attention, speak kindly, respect others’ opinions. " Yet in a world rife with traffic jams and jangling ring tones that easily irritate, they require heightened awareness and cultivated discipline to achieve. Even so, Gross believes they respond to an intense need, a craving for gentleness and kindness in a harsh world."

In the real world and in Askville, we are often confronted with irritating people, circumstances, and difficult situations that many times bring out the worst in us. Often we respond in a negative way and justify our behavior because we were provoked. Ultimately, we alone are responsible for what we say and for the way we respond to others.

We can blame others (our boss, coworkers, relatives, friends, the Askville Mayor) but at the end of the day, we alone are responsible for all we do or say. I like what Forni said about himself at the end of the article: He sometimes fails to be civil, he graciously admits. "I remain a flawed messenger bearing a good message."

But since that moment more than a decade ago, his life has never been the same, he said. "I think of myself as someone who gradually stumbled upon a truth greater than the truth he had believed before. " I for one, would like to say I choose civility in all my interactions, both in Askville and in real life.

Thanks for sharing this HeartsBrainCourage! You give me some hope. Kyasi's Recommendations Choosing Civility: The Twenty-five Rules of Considerate Conduct Amazon List Price: $12.95 Used from: $6.56 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (based on 17 reviews) .

Sign Me Up! I am fairly new to Askville compared to many out there and I admit that I have been shocked as some of the vitriol that has been passed around posing as discussions. I, for one, wholeheartedly embrace the ideas of civility as expressed by the Professor. In re-reading the list, it stuck me as funny - this is the stuff my parents and grandparents tried to instill in me while growing up.

Some of the lessons stuck and others never took root. I shall work on those items that don't come easy to me and hope others will too. There is such a wonderful eclectic groups of people and their questions in this forum and I would like to see it kept that way.

I am reminded of something that I told my ex-husband - sometimes agreeing to disagree is a wonderful option. Everyone is entitled to their opinions - but they should be presented with civility as an offering - not something that needs to be jammed down someone's throat. Criticism should not be personal.

If you want to offer info that might change someone's mind, offer it intelligently and civilly - and support your answers. Don't get personal - that takes the fun out of the whole idea of Askville. I will admit that some questions and answers deserve be ridiculed, but I keep that to myself.

I talk to the computer but I never let my fingers get into those tirades. Society as a whole needs to practice civility - just as we need to here on this forum. I think that everyone would be better for it.

I am with you on this journey to save Askville..... Let's win this war on trolls! I say we all as friends, continue to help others and work together to help build a better Askville. To rescue Askville from the ruins, and lift everyone out of the gutters and swamp areas.

We have been attacked hard by what is known as a tornado, and we have to salvage our community.. our streets are all flooded with notices of people leaving and others staying to fight this plague alone, with no knowledge of OSHA or other hazmat issues. We have trolls, cheaters, cowards, pests and reporters... the media is getting around about people deserting the community, but no word from the MAYOR OF ASKVILLE. I would like everyone to address their concerns to the mayor... we need his input to get our properties free from pests, and trolls are trying to loot.

I have a sign on my site, it says... "You Loot.. I'll Shoot! " I have some "fools gold" that they are probably after.. this tornado is ruining it for the rest of us. That's exactly what it feels like around here.. everday that I come, it's the same people starting trouble and we the exterminators and firemen try to clean the area, and put the smoke out.

These wild fires are beginning to get old, and the flooding of people trying to desert us. I have been here for over a year, and I am begging everyone to please listen to my statement.... We the people of Askville, need to come together and fight this war on trolls! We can salvage all of the ruins, and build our community by sticking together by disinfecting, exterminating and ignoring any signs of abnormality or an abundance of trolling activity.

If we keep feeding the trolls, they will continue to live off of us.. But, if we starve them.. they will eventually leave without a trace. The Askville Staff doesn't want to step in, so we the people have to fight for what is right... And to do so, we have to stick together and fight this fast. If you see trolling or attacks.. report them as such.

Contact me and I will report it... and I also will note it in the discussion that I observed the Q, and it contains abusive contents, it's not acceptable, and it won't be toleraded. These cowards and trolls are not going to mess with me.. I am sick of it! NOW... what are we going to do about cleaning up our community after this tornado?

Let's all work together today..... We need to have a few people who have experience in street cleaning, project management, evironmental and hazmat operations, problem solving, construction workers, web designers and peacemakers. We need a crew that is willing to volunteer their services to make Askville cleaner and safer for all of us! We can do it... if we all stick together!

Askville, needs our help... this tornado really did a number on us! People are scattered all around, some are leaving for good, while others are... looting, running for shelter, standing up for themselves and others, while others are harassing and trolling our streets! My campaign is for all of us to help win this war on trolls!

We need to pay attention and acknowledge others, when thinking your best, to listen and be inclisive. Speaking kindly and don't speak ill, with accepting and giving praise, respecting even a subtle "No", and respecting others' opinions, when minding your body, being agreeable, keeping it down, by respecting other people's time, respecting other people's space, apologizing earnestly, asserting yourself, by avoiding personal questions, caring for your guests, being a considerate guest, thinking twice before asking for favors, and refraining from idle complaints. Also, accepting and giving constructive criticism and respecting the environment and being gentle to animals, don't shift responsibility and blame, if all Askvillers pledged to "choose civility", and to remind each other of our pledge, WE could improve our interactions with eachother here in Askville!

Reading this article in today's Washington Post prompted me to ask this question: washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/articl....

" "This question is for members of the Askville community who have been here for at least one month." "A client of mine wants us to develop a web 2.0 community. "Anybody know how many members AskVille has?

" "If Askviller? S pledged to "choose civility" could we improve the Askville experience for all?" "What happened to choosing more topics on askville? " "How critical are the members of the Askville community when they judge answers?

This question is for members of the Askville community who have been here for at least one month.

A client of mine wants us to develop a web 2.0 community. I'm looking for feedback from askville members on features ...

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
