Seriously, I wondered this as I cleaned my dryer's lint trap this morning. I can't begin to imagine how much dryer lint I've tossed in my life. Cleaning the lint trap after each load of clothes, tossing it in the little garbage can next to the dryer.
Even though it looks digusting, I guess it would be just as clean as the clothes I just washed and dried. So, does anyone know of any use for dryer lint, besides sitting in a little garbage can waiting to be dumped into the big trash bag that will get taken to the curb for the garbage collectors to pick up and dump into their truck that will drive to the dump and dump it along with all the other trash into a big pile? I have a boy scout use for dryer lint! They’re fire starters. My son would take an egg carton and fill each empty egg holder with the lint.
Then if he was doing it at boy scouts, they would take paraffin wax and pour it over the lint. At home, he would use a candle, under my supervision, and let wax drip on the lint until it saturated the top. It would dry and then when he would go camping with his troop, they would use these to start their campfires.

Well you can always give it to your birdie friends Place it in trees or in grassy areas for the birds to pick up and build their nests with (I do that now and then in spring). But since there's way to much lint in the world for the birds to build the Taj Mahal out of...here are a few other uses I dug up: - Use it as kindling for a fire. Because of it's ease of floating, I might not use it in the home (lest it fly out of the fireplace), but I'd definitley bring some on camping trips!
- Take your old socks, stuff with lots and lots of dryer lint, tie the ends, and then use as draft stoppers near doors and windows. Add a little bit of decorative fabric or paint to make them look seasonal and interesting. -Line your houseplant pots with dryer lint, then add soil, and plant.
The lint keeps the soil in the bottom, while allowing water to soak through and out the drainage holes. ...Or you can always go to this website to learn how to make fabulous art out of your lint (hehe): hgtv.com/hgtv/cr_fabric_other/article/0,... like this! All the advice I've read though recommends NOT USING LINT for pillows or stuffed animals.
Lint is apparently HIGHLY FLAMMABLE and is not safe to use for these purposes. Have a Lint-tastic day! Use it for a fire starter, and much more! To be honest, I only save it when I'm about to go camping since it is a great fire-starter. I did some searching, though, and now I almost feel guilty about throwing it away!
I found a page of ideas from thriftyfun.com/tf184073.tip.html that sound great. Everything from: Nesting material for birds Composting for worms Insulation Making paper Making clay Dryer Lint Clay Ingredients Here's recipes for making clay out of dryer lint. 1 1/2 cups lint from the dryer 1 cup water 1/2 cup flour 2 drops wintergreen mint flavoring Old newspaper Paint Directions Place the lint in a saucepan and cover it with the water.
When the lint is saturated, add the flour and stir until it is smooth. Add the drops of wintergreen oil flavoring. Cook the mixture, stirring constantly, until it forms peaks and holds together.
Pour it onto newspaper to cool. Shape and model figures, or cover a form with it, such as a balloon. Allow to dry for 3 to 5 days, then paint and decorate as required.
I think there should be a movement to save all of the lint, and have collection sites for it. Think about it - we could make enough dryer lint pots so there could be pots for everyone on earch! My Mother's Use... For dryer lint was to leave it outside and let the birds use it for nesting mateial, and the birds would pick at it and take it. She did not always leave it outside, that was too much lint for the birds to use, only a few times a month. Also, the lint could be used for nesting material for hamsters, gerbils and other pet rodents.
We used to give our pet gerbils an old poece of cloth or towel and they used to shred it and use it for their nest. How about using it for filling pillows or plush toys? .
It seems that it would work as pillow stuffing. If you're a pillow maker, why couldn't dryer lint be used as stuffing? It would take quite a lot, I suppose, but it seems as if it would be a suitable material.
We actually have a local artist who uses dryer lint in her art, but, I know, not practical. Lynxia's Recommendations Oh Sew Easy Pillows: 29 Projects for Stylish Living Amazon List Price: $19.95 Used from: $8.71 .
