I think it is original music and the lyrics come from the writings of Dante Alligheri. I looked on Wikipedia, under Loreena McKennitt is compared to Enya, but McKennitt's music is more grounded in traditional and classical invocations, using literary works as sources of lyrics and springboards for interpretation such as "The Lady of Shalott" by Lord Tennyson, "Prospero's Speech" (the final soliloquy in William Shakespeare's The Tempest), "Snow" by Archibald Lampman, "Dark Night of the Soul" by St. John of the Cross, Dante's Prayer, William Blake's "Lullaby", Yeats' "The Stolen Child", "It was an English Ladye Bright" by Sir Walter Scott and "The ghwayman" by Alfred Noyes.

This is from her website. It is the notes from the album liner. Dante’s Prayer December 17, 1995, Trans-Siberian Railway: It is now Day 5 on this train journey across wintry Siberia.

Travelling alone, it is strange not to be able to have a conversation with anyone, but one learns how much can be conveyed through actions, body language, a look in the eye… I saw some men on the platform today and one resembled my father. He had reddish hair and a long, very Celtic-looking face I would have expected to see in Ireland, not Russia… I am reminded again of the Celtic exhibition in Venice and the suggestion that the Celts may have originated in the Russian steppes. Perhaps the love of horses which began there is the very same that can be seen in County Kildare today.

December 18, 1995, Trans-Siberian Railway: Dante’s The Divine Comedy keeps running through my mind as I gaze out at the landscape passing before me, thinking of the people who inhabit it and how they share this human condition… Are we helping or hurting each other? … How has the West come to this place of transition? Honourably?

What are we bringing them? What are their expectations? Are our lives really what they imagine?

We always want to believe there is a place better than our own….

When the dark wood fell before meAnd all the paths were overgrownWhen the priests of pride say there is no other wayI tilled the sorrows of stoneI did not believe because I could not seeThough you came to me in the nightWhen the dawn seemed forever lostYou showed me your love in the light of the starsCast your eyes on the oceanCast your soul to the seaWhen the dark night seems endlessPlease remember meThen the mountain rose before meBy the deep well of desireFrom the fountain of forgivenessBeyond the ice and the fireCast your eyes on the oceanCast your soul to the seaWhen the dark night seems endlessPlease remember meThough we share this humble path, aloneHow fragile is the heartOh give these clay feet wings to flyTo touch the face of the starsBreathe life into this feeble heartLift this mortal veil of fearTake these crumbled hopes, etched with tearsWe'll rise above these earthly caresCast your eyes on the oceanCast your soul to the seaWhen the dark night seems endlessPlease remember me...

Oh yes you are right, Ol' Yeddar. I stand corrected!

Wow this song is really excellent and I must admit that I have not heard better lyrics lately. I am really impressed with this song.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
