Did Nigeria resist colonization?

Nigeria was not united as a single independent state until after its territories were already under the influence of the British Empire. The territories that today constitute the modern state of Nigeria had been under British influence from as early as 1807 when the English crown abolished the slave trade. To that end however, the British did not truly begin occupying territory until the mid 1880s.

While they faced some resistance from local tribes and from the remnants of the Kanem-Bornu Empire, the British had little problem facing their less advanced military forces.
