Yes, you are 100% correct. Look at the Bush tax cuts. Republicans wanted to keep them, even for the rich, but now they cry out against the deficit.
If they were serious about cutting the deficit, they would have let the tax cuts expire. Speaking of the deficit, Paul Ryan's budget doesn't even cut the deficit in a meaningful way. And Pawlenty's budget is worse!
End Medicare, end Medicaid, cut social programs, don't fund infrastructure, cut education, but give more tax cuts to the wealthy. Cry about Social Security, but don't support fair taxation for all wage earners--only those making less than $108,000 should have to pay. And what about the Pentagon?
A number of Repubs have actually tried to increase spending here. Others have found ways to cut out some waste only to earmark it towards pork in their own districts, rather than using the savings to pay down the deficit. One Republican (from an oil-producing state) has actually called for an end to subsidies for biofuel--a savings to the taxpayer that would make the economy fairer.
However, other Republicans say they'll go along only if other taxes are cut. In other words, rather than support good tax policy, they would prefer to give a tax break where it isn't needed than to use the income to balance the budget. The most logical thing is to have everyone pay his fair share of taxes first; if a surplus develops, then we can lower the rates.
Some Republicans are even talking about voting to let the governement default for the first time in history. They don't care if such a move could easily bring about a worse financial crisis than that of 1929. And what about fillibusters?
Fillibuster judges and members of the Cabinet. Don't allow a Cabinet member to get his fair salary. Fillibuster Elizabeth Warren or anybody else nominated to serve on the Consumer Regulatory Committee.
Fillibuster a Nobel Prize winner nominated for the Federal Reserve Bank. Fillibuster needed DoD spending because the pork doesn't go to your state. No, the Repubilcans don't care about the nation.
All they care about is politics.
Ah, another very pertinent question. Of course they are! At the very least, repubs are blocking things President Obama wants to do that may be good ideas, because they want him to fail.
In making him look bad, they also are doing bad things to the country and to the people. After all, Repub Senator Mitch McConnell said their #1 goal was to ensure President Obama was a one-term president. Given that statement, doesn't that mean they will sabotage him?
And sabotaging him is equal to sabotaging the economy to ensure he won't be reelected.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
