Not me, but my mother.... got her first job in accounting that way. My mother did not get her HS diploma because she had TB and was in a sanitarium. This was in the forty’s and not many people had much of an education.

She applied for a job doing payroll, something she had never done before and got the job. The first day on the job she took out the payroll that was done by the previous employee and studied it until she could do it backwards and forwards. After about 6 weeks they asked her if she knew any accounting because they liked her work and wanted her to take over that job as well.

She told them yes and started doing that job too. One day she decided that she was tired of paying someone to do her taxes so she started doing her own and before long she was doing the taxes for the company and most of the employees at the business. When she moved to Florida she decided to start doing monthly bookkeeping out of her home, because by this time she had read every book on accounting she could find.

She opened her business outside of the house in 1964 and ran this business until her death in 1988 at 67 years old I took over the business when she died and still run it today. Something she taught me if you don’t know something go look it up or sit down and figure it out, you can’t always depend on someone else to be there to help you with your problems. A she never learned to use a computer.

Not me, but my husband did. In high school, he applied to be a lifeguard. The catch was that he couldn't swim!

He just wanted to hang out and watch the girls. The pool manager didn't even ask to see him swim. I guess he just assumed my husband could swim.

When he arrived for the job, he had to beg another lifeguard to let him patrol the shallow water. That way he could actually wade in and save a drowning child! He was never found out..
