Direct TV HD DVR vs TiVo HD DVR. What are the differences?

Direct TV HD DVR vs TiVo HD DVR. What are the differences? I currently have a standard DirecTV Tivo DVR and want to get HD, but I've heard the Direct TV HD DVR (non-TiVo) currently being offered is not as good.

Does anyone have experience with both systems they can share with me? Any major differences? Cable service is not an option for me.

I read that Direct TV & TiVo recently signed a deal for a Direct TV/TiVo HD DVR box, but the new hardware may not be available for quite a while. Asked by HoFoCo 39 months ago Similar questions: Direct TV HD DVR TiVo differences Consumer Electronics > TV & Video.

I have also heard it is not a good switch I can't say I have experience with both but I have read that it is not a wise move to switch to a non-Tivo. "I made the switch in August. Big mistake. To put it charitably, the DirecTV HD-DVR is crap.

Oh, it has a few nice features and an interface that is reasonably intuitive. But it simply isn’t reliable. I’m on my second box now, and here are some of the symptoms I’ve seen: * At least three times a week, with no warning, the box decides to stop responding to all input.

It continues to record in the background, but it won’t allow you to use the menus until you restart the system. So, you sit down after dinner, with the box actively recording a program that’s on right now and decide to watch something previously recorded and … you can’t. You can’t rewind the current recording or pause whatever’s playing live.

If you press the Pause button, nothing happens. If you choose an item from your playlist, you get only a black screen. The solution is to restart the machine, interrupting the current recording.

* Speaking of restarts… It takes eight minutes to reboot the DirecTV HD DVR (I’ve had lots of opportunities to time it). * Sometimes the HD DVR decides that you only need to watch a few minutes of a program you’ve asked it to record. For instance, the machine decided for me that this week’s episode of Rescue Me was just boring after the first 13 minutes, so that’s when it stopped recording.

* Sometimes it just decides to stop working altogether. Last night, I switched on my home theater system and was greeted with … a black screen. The Record light was on the DirecTV box (it was supposed to be halfway through a recording of Countdown), but the power light was off, and pushing the power button on the remote or the box itself had no effect.

After pulling the power plug to force a restart (eight minutes to reboot, remember), I was back in business. Unfortunately, that first half hour wasn’t there for me to watch."http://www.edbott.com/weblog/?p=1778The following forum is a good one. Directv dvr is so bad it's 75% of the reason we're going to cable We recently made a temporary move to Oregon and decided to upgrade to HD while we were at it. Since there are no HD & satellite compatible Tivo's that meant getting a Directv DVR. Our Tivo was about 4 years old, so this is a comparison to older models, not the current Tivos.

Directv DVR has no suggestion capability. Not a huge deal, but we don't record a ton of shows manually, so unless we set it to record 1 of each show we might watch, the odds are good the dvr will be virtually empty. Directv DVR has no wishlists.

Since we were setting it up in the summer, this meant that we had to search again for shows we might want to watch every week or two as fall approached. We couldn't find a way to tell it to record a show that wasn't on the current schedule. We've found searching for shows on Directv to be very frustrating. It seems taht you have to search on each channel.

Again not a big deal for everyone, but if for instance you want to watch Dr. Who regradless of whether it's on BBCA or SciFi, you will miss shows until you set it up for the 'right' channel. Ditto for shows that are on HD channels and regular channels. That stumped us for a while because we weren't getting shows in HD that we knew were being broadcast in HD The menu in Directv DVR is really slow and while it has a small picture up while the menu is going, I'd rather go through the menu faster and see more menu than a tiny picture while trying to scroll through the menu.

Another major annoyance -- we run our audio through a receiver, as probably many people who have HD do. The Directv remote can control our receiver, but only when it's in AV1 mode. So, when you hit volume in DVR mode it controls the TV, which we would like to always be muted, and you have to switch the tab at the top to AV1 each time you adjust the volume, then switch back to control the DVR for fast forward, pause, etc. Doesnt' sound like a huge deal, until you realize how often commercials are at a different volume. We haven't figured out exactly what's happening with deleted shows, but it seems that the Directv DVR will delete shows rather than not record. So sya you want 3 'The Daily Shows' which is on several times a week.

We always have the last 3 shown, not 3, then no new ones recorded until we delete. Some might consider this a feature, but it's not when you're halfway through a show and come back the next day to find it deleted. All in all I can't recommend the Directv DVR at all.

Were it just me I'd give up HD to not deal with their dvr, but since my husband has been hooked on the good picture we're looking at going back to cable after many years.

1 We just switched today and if I realized I was giving up Tivo for DirectTV's DVR, I don't think I would have done it. My husband on the other hand wanted his HD so it forced the switch but I am extremely disappointed as I loved my TIVO. Differences:User interface is not as simple (and I am computer savvy)When you record PPV, it now FORCES the expiration of 3 days.

A great way for DirectTV to charge you over and over. A Blockbuster business model vs Netflix where you can keep as long as you want and delete at will. I think that is what annoys me most given we pay close to $300 a month for DirectTV.

Now they want to nickel and dime all the rentals too forcing g you to havve to watch them within a few days. Doesn't appear that you can do keyword wishlists as you can in TIVOSLOW, SLOW, SLOW... much slower than TIVO for recording and finding showsI am super disappointed and if cable DVR is better, it will be a matter of months before I switch too. However I do recall cable services was not as good as DirectTV .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
