DIY garage door opener? I have seen the door monitors but nothing that actually opens the door?

The real ones just use something like a bike chain and a motor.. you could run a rope through some pulleys and stick the end of the rope under the garage door so you could open it from outside. (jk! ) so all you would need is your motor/winch of choice, your rope/chain/cable of choice, an Arduino (unnecessary) but something to receive your signal and initiate a forward or reverse motion depending on position and/or what button you push if you decide to go with an up/down button.

Also probably going to need some kind of speed controller to run the motor/prevent it from chopping people in half or something. Now that i'm thinking about it, you're probably going to have to disable whatever keeps the door in the UP position, so that gravity can help close it, maybe lock it open with a solenoid or something. Or you could just have a more complicated way to close the door.

Garage doors don't come down by themselves, you pull them down. So it would either need a push from the top, or a pull from the bottom, so a pulley system at the bottom of the tracks.. or.. yeah, I haven't actually stopped and looked at a garage door opener, or a garage door for that matter, in a looong time. To answer your question, Yes.

Someone has attempted this, just not me, as I prefer to reduce my carbon footprint by sleeping all day.

Just be careful. I'm going to just come out and say it: Use a commercial garage opener and install all the safety features. That said, I have two garage door openers from two different eras.

Maybe talking about their safety features will help. I believe both are Chamberlin (spelling? ) who OEM most if not all Sears garage openers.

The old one uses a mechanical torque switch connected to a stepping relay which reverses the door motor if it encounters an obstruction (reads: small child). The newer one (I think) senses the change in RPM of the door motor. Encountering an obstruction slows the door motor down and (I think) the processor senses this and reverses or stops (depending on what state it is in) the door motor.

The newer one also has an "electronic eye beam" across the base of the garage door opening. -good luck.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
