1 I am thinking that the drive mechanism may be worn. If the door closes under power, but won't open, it may be worn just enough that it skips teeth when you try to open the door, but the slightly lesser load to close it doesn't make it skip.

2 I tried to help it to open but it seems that the latch (quick release) doesn't engage with the screw in the opening process, just the closing process. When I disengage the latch, the screw moves fine in both directions.

4 The repair technician came out last night and the answer is...... the plastic trolley which contains the latch (latch was ok but the trolley was worn out where it contacts the screw drive and wouldn't connect reliably). That part ($86) and some preventative maintenance by replacing the bearings that the door rides on cost $270. Thanks to those who helped.
