Do I need to leave the "undergravel filter" in my aquarium? I have a very stable ten gallon freshwater aquarium?

I have a very stable ten gallon freshwater aquarium...with a medium sized pleco and a dozen small tetras. It's been set up for five years and I stopped using the charcoal/airstone part of the undergravel filter about a year ago with no ill effects. (I replaced it with a bubble bar, so they're still getting water circulation and aeration. ) I'd like to take out the grid that holds the gravel up since so much of it has fallen through and it seems like the red algae thrives down there where my pleco can't reach it.Is this likely to "crash" my system?

A related question- when I buy a new big tank (55-100 gal, haven't decided), can I set it up without the undergravel filter if I use the filter medium from my small tank and give it plenty of time to cycle as I add fish slowly? You should be fine... we didn't add our underground filter in our big tank (55 gal) for 2 years after we had the tank! All the fish lived perfectly happy with out it! They didn't seem to mind it in there either.

Taking it out the grid might cause a disruption tho. When we moved we left about a quarter of water in our tank with all the fish alive. They had all teh filters and everything in there but not running of course...during hte ride in the trailor, my husband was holding the tank, the gunk underneath the gride all came lose and really really poluted the water.

The fish started flopping and jumpin up... as soon as we got it to the place we were storin it. We added more water and they seemed to be pretty happy and well adjusted, but our ggenius friend who was watching the fish kept saying hte heater wasnt working and that it was a lost cause...so he unplugged it...it was working we tried to tell him the light ment it was but no he was too bullheaded to listen. He killed all the fish except 3 which we cleaned the tank out and kept the 3 alive for a few days then they went cuz the bucket wasnt enough space for a giant plicostomus.

All our ghost shrimp survived and htey are now happy in a 5 gallon tank.

Fish tank advice When you have any fresh water tank under gravel is not really the greatest way to go. Therefore yes you can take the under gravel filter out. However, you need more than the bubble tube for the tank.

The bubble tube offers circulation by moving the water from the bottom to the surface where oxygen exchange takes place, but you still need to filter out the waste from the fish. There are several options for this one of which is a small inexpensive corner filter. These have cartridges that can be replaced monthly and your fish will thank you.

Now if you are looking to upgrade to a larger tank the best advice is to decide what you would like to put in the tank. There are several filter options you can decide on. One is the filters that hang on the back of the tank.

These will provide good filtration and circulation for the tank but be sure that you have a long enough tube to suction from the bottom to the middle of the tank. If you are pinched for space behind the tank then you might consider a canister filter that can be placed underneath and have the tubes run into the tank. These are just two options. As for setting the tank up you can let the tank run for a week prior to adding any fish and then be sure to check all of your levels.

The beauty of fresh water fish is that there is no extreme wait time as with salt water. I hope this helps. Kimy .

What is a good filter for 29 gallon freshwater aquarium.

I need advice on switching 29 gallon freshwater aquarium to saltwater aquarium.

I need a undergravel filter or a external filter for a 2.5 gallon tank, any suggestions.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
