A few years ago my cat had his teeth cleaned - after a few prompts from the vet; and it turned out he had an absessed tooth. So now they're suggesting it again. I'm ready to take him in as suggested - to prevent all the things the vet warns about.
I was just curious, because I rarely hear other cat owners mention having their cat's teeth cleaned - ever. Now that he's an indoor cat, I've been freed of emergency trip to the vet; but now I'm about to spend $300 dollars for a teeth cleaning... argh ;/ Asked by Cabby 55 months ago Similar questions: cat owners cat's teeth cleaned vet suggests Pets > Cats.

I never did, but it's not a bad idea... I'm embarassed to say that I never even heard of taking cats to the dentist or having their teeth cleaned until somewhat recently. Growing up we always had a large amount of cats, and aside from being spayed and neutered or receiving standard shots we never had to do much with them at the vet. I know a lot of dog owners have their teeth cleaned, but our vet never had even suggested it to us oddly enough.
I feel bad for your kitty's absessed tooth, but I must say it's the first I've heard of it. Sorry it's not so friendly on the wallet but I'm sure your kitty's love is worth it :) Good luck! =JJ= .
I have never had my cats teeth cleaned It would be a nearly impossible task with my two Siamese. And they're almost 10 years old now, so forget it, unless I notice something serious it's just not going to happen. Fortunately, they've never had a problem that I've been aware of.
Don't get me wrong, I love my cats and I want to take care of them, but this is just one of those cases where the treatment is likely worse than the potential condition. I wouldn't want to put them through something as stressful as that at this point in their lives. Sources: My experience .
There are pros and cons to teeth cleaning Pros: cleaning can show problems or potential problems. Cons: Cleaning requires general anesthesia, as the cat ages this becomes more risky. The less sedation the better. In toehr words say it for emergencys as age progresses.
If not feeding, swith to dry food as this helps keeping the teeth clean. Some cats/dogs are comfortable, or just like the attention. You can clean the teeth yourself.
Occasionaly have the vet check for that abcess or pother things. If your vet isn't ok with this find another. Sources: Personal experience .
1 Wow, I wish I would have asked earlier. You guys would have changed my mind - for the better... He had his teeth cleaned, but he hasn't eaten in almost 3 days, and he's kind of skittish. So I'm terribly dreading taking him in tomorrow for some emergency fluid intake.
He's eight, and no more teeth cleaning for him! Thanks for your comments.

2 I remember my vet telling me back when I first got my Siamese that I should brush their teeth regularly. But even as kittens these guys were very difficult patients, so I knew it just wasn't going to happen. Depending on the cat, though, if you start cleaning their teeth from an early age you can probably avoid a stressful vet visit.
Too late now for us, of course, but it's something to keep in mind for our next cats. But I still don't think it's going to happen. :) .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
