Do portable GPS car navigation systems (e. G Magellon, Garmin, etc) require a subscription service? If not is the info updated through the GPS and "paid for" by the up front cost of the device?

GPS--No subscription needed This is what surprises me, too--there is no monthly fee for GPS info through your device! Not that I'm complaining, of course, but it amazes me that we don't have to pay SOMETHING to SOMEONE for all the info that is beamed into our vehicles through our GPS! I would think that the satellite signals come in, and Garmin or Tom Tom or whoever then "translates" it into the colorful graphics we see, and so it seems like they would want to be compensated for this service.
I assume that basically we already have paid for the service through our tax dollars for the government to create the originally system and to send up the satellites. " GPS is operated by the United States Government and is provided free. " I would assume that the GPS manufacture figures in all their technology fees into the upfront cost of the device.

The location is free, but the map upgrades cost money The basic GPS service is free. The satellites are out there broadcasting their locations, and your GPS receiver compares that signal to its stored maps. You don't need to pay for the signals.
However, the internal maps gradually becomed outdated, and map upgrades cost money. Also, some GPS units can also receive broadcast traffic reports and use that information when they compute the best route. That's a subscription service, too..
Portable GPS Devices Do not require a subscription service, but the maps that are stored in them should be updated every year, and there is a fee for obtaining the new maps for the gps device.
For Garmin at least, the basic service is part of purchasing the device A use a Garmin device, it came with maps for the U.S. (and Canada I think). If I wanted to use it outside of that area I would have to buy the maps separately (about $50 a pop I think). There are various other services that I would have to pay for if I used them, but the basic usage, planning trips, getting directions, finding nearby restaurants, gas stations and other businesses, are part of the package.
I believe that the direction service itself is courtesy of the U.S. government's satellites.
1 I have a Tom Tom and, in the few years I have it, only recently did they have an updated map available for download from their website to my unit for about $150 dollars. So after you buy the Tom Tom, you'll register over the net and you'll be notified over the net if there is a map update. Then you pay for it then if you want it.
I didn't need it but got it anyway. It was about four years since they had an update.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
