Do relaxing activities cause the relaxation response?

Being relaxed and eliciting the relaxation response are not the same unless being relaxed includes both a focus upon a repetitive stimulus and a passive attitude. The relaxation response is not obtained by reading a book, listening to quiet music, sleeping or "taking it easy." Though these activities may be relaxing to you, they do not bring about the beneficial physiologic changes of the relaxation response.
