Do the foods that we eat cause certain types of dreams?

I believe not Dreams apparently form by using memories and images in your self-concience. If you, for example, had a traumatic childhood, then one way of you healing from this trauma is for your brain to cleanse itself, therefore dreams about this childhood, parts of it or makes up dreams using people involved in the trauma. Another example, if you feel like you are losing power in a relationship, you may dream of being caught by someone and locked up or a dream about being lost at sea.

The book I mention below (written by a psychologist) explains all of this for you as well as including a dream dictionary to help you interpret your dreams. I have used it several times and it is pretty much spot on and makes a lot of sense. So rather than food, I believe it's got to do with the happenings and problems of your life, the dreams are based of these.

Yes, foods that have tryptophan! Tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin. Serotonin decreases REM sleep which is your dream sleep.

However, it INCREASES vivid dreaming. Pretty cool stuff. I don't know what you mean by certain types of dreams but if you mean those intense, really vivid dreams, I would suggest eating food with high levels of tryptophan before bedtime.

These would include nuts, turkey (most bird meats are high) and dairy. That warm glass of milk works wonders for a reason... Tryptophan is also a mild sedative. There is a thought that large meals or spicy meals can cause nightmares but this is really anecdotal.

Also, I have heard large amounts of alcohol can cause nightmares. So I guess no large spicy meals while getting drunk right before sleep? Anyways hope that helps!

1 Nothing definite that I know of. Perhaps an upset tummy can cause nightmares, that's possible. I remember sleeping with my hair done up in some stiff plastic curlers, well one of them was causing pressure and pain and I had a bad dream but woke up soon after.

And what's that about a feather? .

3 No. Dreams are pretty mysterious, and there's not much of a certain connection to anything, much less particular foods.
