Yes....sort of The pumps have a screen or other filtration device to prevent them from being clogged up. You have to manually clear the screened area occasionally -- or often, depending on how many trees your fountain is under! Some of the bigger pumps have removable screens which can be taken out and cleaned.

We have a large water feature by our front door and a smaller fountain in the back. Both need us to reach in and scoop away any garbage from the intake screen. We only do it a few times a year however.

I would image the very large commercial fountains have a series of screens or filters which can be removed and cleaned, but I am not aware of any residential size fountains which are the same way.
