Both. We have lots of fun coloring eggs --usually on Good Friday. Sometimes we eat them and sometimes the kids rehide them until the eggs are as worn out as the kids.

Sometimes we have each person in the family paint an egg to represent a wish. Then we go in the woods and throw them up against a tree and let them go splat. Ostensibly the tree conveys your wish to the universe.

Some of the eggs go into the Easter baskets on Easter morning with the other usual stuff--toys and candy and little stuffed animals.

We loved to decorate eggs! When my kids were small, we colored Easter eggs. It was one of our rituals like carving pumpkins for Halloween, and making cookies and gingerbread houses for Christmas.

We’d hard boil them first, or if I was really ambitious I’d make the two small holes on either end and blow out the insides. Then we’d buy those Pas kits with the tablets to make the different colors. When they got older we had wax crayons so we could do resistance dyes and some fairly complex designs.
