GETTING THE LOVE YOU WANT, A GUIDE FOR COUPLES My therapist highly recommended my husband and I to read this. She recommended it for a few reasons. First of all, this book is not just for couples.It explains why we choose the mates we choose, or why we are drawn to the types of people we are drawn to (for potential life partners).

Harville Hendrix starts the book with THE UNCONSCIOUS MARRIAGE, meaning what went on in our childhood that makes us reach to things in our lives today, why we have emotions toward things today, that others might not react the same to, why we act the way we act today, etc. So you are learning a great deal about yourself and why you do the things you do, why you view life the way you do.So in this light (you have to read it to totally understand what I am saying but pls take my word for it) people that are not in relationships can benefit from this book as well. The other reason she recommended us to read this book is because for a while my husband and I were (it is better now, and I truly believe it is because what we have gained so far from this book) more than not fighting/arguing and not getting along. We were not being "loving" towards one another.

I hated this and whenever we fight I hate it (this has a lot to do with the fact that my parents are divorced and I have made a vow to myself that I will never get divorced, because I would never want my children going through what I indirectly went through). I was also very much bothered by the tension and high amount of stupid arguements because we just had our two yr anniversary and it scared me that we were being this way and haven't been married a long time at all. Well I have to say Hendrix puts light on so many areas.

For instance, if you grew up with a parent who constantly scolded you, you will (subconscioulsy) find a mate that does the same. If you grew up with a parent who engulfed you and never let you out of his or her sight, you will seek this kind of person in a mate. The reason we do this, according to Hendrix is because the emotions that we felt because of having parents who were this way, are first not 100% dealt with, and second are so deeply inside of us, we subconciously crave that that type of person/env't because that's the only way or person we know.

Our parents are our primary caregivers and as they say we are a product of our env't. According to Hendrix, there are two parts to the mind, the "unconscious mind" and the "conscious mind. " The "unconscious mind" is the part of the mind that is your child mind, you do things a certain way because this is all you know, due to your up-bringing.

The "conscious mind" is your adult mind, meaning you have come to the realization that you can change yourself, how you react to situations, how you communicate with individuals, in this book your spouse, and you can get your needs met, how you can help your spouse gets his or her needs met. This all leads toward improved communication, not expecting your partner to read your mind, and vice versa, knowing how to express your emotions in a healthy and productive way, and how you both can have the love you want. In general...no! I read an ENORMOUS amount (1 to 3 books per day, usually) and rather than "self-help," I'll find a book on the subject matter, and read that--and design my own changes. That being said, my spouse quit smoking with Allen Carr's "The Easy-Way to Quit Smoking," and it was simply an amazing thing to watch.

I read the book before he started, and the "rethinking" process that Carr recommends, the arguements he puts forth certainly had ME nodding my head. In part, I'm sure John was ready for the message, but I've seen that man TRY to quit time after time, get about 2.5 weeks into the task, be horrible to live with, and then and backslide, then metally beat himself up and feel like a failure. With this, he just stopped, and he was done.

The Carr book took the processes that are most often recommended and demonstrated how they made smoking an object of desire, rather than changing your attitude about the act itself. ALSO: A friend of mine wrote a book (she got interviewed on several of the morning news shows with it) called "Eating with Your Anorexic. Yes, sometimes. My basic feeling on this is that MOST of the time, I should help myself, rather than looking to somebody else to help me. However, I always enjoy learning wisdom and new ideas from people, and that is why I chose to read "The Seven Habits of " That was a wonderful book, which I will read again and continue recommending to others.It was also my first "self help" book, and after reading it, I have decided that there may be other good self help books with interesting information in them.

Basically, I don't feel that I learned that much new information. Most of what the author mentions I knew in one way or another. He simply put all the information in one place, organized it well and connected it in new ways for me.

By Sam Horn. After years of practicing/learning Kempo Karate I couldn’t resist that title and I bought it.In a nutshell it was about deflecting verbal conflicts simply. I read it in a day (not immediately mind you it took a few months to actually pick it up).

After I read it I wanted the rest of her books. They were just fantastic. She has a very simple style of writing that is high on humor and actually gives step by step instructions.

Not a nebulous "think good of yourself and others will too" approach. After that I did get the rest of her books, except for POP! Which didn’t seem to apply to me.

I read Take the Bully by the Horns next and then What’s Holding You Back and still have not yet gotten to ConZentrate (but boy do I need that one ...). Before I tackle that one I want to read What’s Holding You Back again. It truly worked and helped but without practicing the tools I was given I am slipping back into my "old self".

It depends on the book... Some, like Bible study books (definitely in the "self-help" category as far as I'm concerned! ), I very much enjoy reading. Others that seem too "big-worded, long-winded, and over-defining", I find hard to complete, even if I know I could benefit from them.

Sigh! "Enthusiasm Makes the Difference" by Norman Vincent Peale is the most recent self-help tome I've completed; it helped me a great deal, by defining enthusiasm in a way that was both appealing and effective, and giving some excellent suggestions for getting off my behind and using it in my life. Not only did it keep me on the treadmill (my usual self-help reading spot) when I otherwise would have really wanted to get off, it assisted me in my dealings with my family and my job.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
