I'm talking about questions where there is clearly only one correct answer and you can see that there are already others "working" on the question. Or, in some cases, the asker will have thanked someone in the dicussion for providing the correct answer. I ask this because I usually try not to answer this type of question unless I think I can add something else of interest to my answer like a personal opinion or additional suggestion, but sometimes I don't notice that the asker already has their answer.
I usually feel somewhat embarassed when this happens, but I'm not sure why... Asked by BryroseA 50 months ago Similar questions: answer question correct badly people Amazon > Askville.

I'll answer it to close out the question, especially if there are 4 answers and it's just awaiting a 5th Maybe it's just me, but I hate when a question sits around waiting for answers for 7 days, especially if it's an easy question. Please, someone answer it to close it so it doesn't take 10 days to get a final score! Additionally, questions that don't get a lot of answers are at risk of a default okay.
Every answer needs two votes...if it doesn't get two votes, it automatically is scored "okay". That means the more answers that are posted, the more likely it is that each answer will get enough votes and will be guaranteed to get a REAL score rather than the default okay. So by answering the question, especially if there aren't very many answers, you're helping all the other answerers by giving them another vote.
You're right, though, I usually try to add something extra of interest if I know I'm answering something that already has a correct answer. And, I most often do it if there are 4 answers and it's just needing a 5th to close it. If there's only 1 answer, well, my 2nd answer doesn't help much.
And, I never expect to get anything better than a "good" final rating...I don't pour my heart into it since I know that it's be almost impossible to get a "best answer" ribbon--I'm sure the first answer given in these cases was the most helpful and deserves the "best answer" designation. I wouldn't feel embarrassed. The way Askville is set up, a question asker can't specify how many answers they'd like...5 is the only choice. So you're actually providing a public service by being another answerer: you help close the question without having to wait the full 7 days, and you provide an additional vote.
Now, if you only looked for questions like these...only answered questions that were very easy and already had existing answers, well, then I can see what you mean. But if you only do it sometimes, and with the intent to help, I wouldn't consider it to be points gaming at all. Sources: My opinion .
If I answer a question like that I usually make an effort to add a little extra... I understand what you mean. I do not let it bother me...5 people are given the opportunity to answer so why not answer. You cannot see the answers until 5 have answered so even though an answer to a question may be obvious I still think it is worth answering.
I usually try to add a little additional info...or a link or something else to add a little value to my answer. As a person asking a basic question I would tend to rate the first correct answer given a little higher if I get multiple submissions to the same thing. Especially if I am looking for information immediately..
I try not to answer these questions too unless I think I can add a bit of a slant to the answer. I'll give an example. I answered a question about the 3 primary colors.
Easy answer, right? But I immediately thought of the way this is done in color printing where the 3 primary colors are different. They are cyan, magenta, and yellow not blue, red, and yellow.
Sometimes I hit answer the question too quickly and end up answering even though I know everyone else will already have the correct answer. What I hate though are questions that only require a google search for an answer. Anyone on Askville has enough computer skills to do a google search.
I don't know why people ask these. -layyla-'s Recommendations A WHACK ON THE SIDE OF THE HEAD: How You Can Be More Creative Amazon List Price: $15.99 Used from: $4.79 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (based on 61 reviews) A Whack On the Side of the Head Amazon List Price: $8.94 Used from: $0.01 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (based on 2 reviews) Creativity is sometimes not looking for the right answer or not stopping just because you think you found the right answer. I highly recommend this book for stimulating creativity..
Answer anyway There are four other people working on this, but I chose to answer anyway. First of all, because I just like answering. Secondly, because depending on the question, just because others are answering it doesnt' mean that they will give the right answer.
Or, I might have a different perspective than all the others that just might be the help that the asker is looking for. I wouldn't worry about it if the asker already has an answer--it doesn't mean that they have ALL the info that is out there about it! .
I do answer those kinds of questions When I do, I usually, but not always, try and add something from personal experience or tap into a video that might not be the usual one that would be posted. I don't think you should be embarassed when you post the same answer. Amazingly, I posted an answer regarding the duet with Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock.
There's really only one answer to that but I answered anyway and got the "best answer" award. Until you answer, you never know what's already been posted.
