Do you ever dine alone at a restaurant?

Yes. But always with a good book or magazine. I am now 49 and married.

But, before, I went single to eating establishments quite a lot. I just took good reading material so that I could avoid eye contact with people who might stare. I also learned never to take a newspaper.

If I did, sure as shooting, some fool would walk up and ask to read it and then sit at my booth to do so.

I love to dine alone because it gives me a chance to read. My wife absolutely hates to dine alone but when I’m out and about on my own I just can’t wait to spend a leisurely hour easting and reading. I am a very slow eater by nature so eating by myself gives me a chance to chew at my own pace without feeling rushed and I would rather read than eat so I am getting to do two of my favorite things at once.

Anytime I leave the house by myself whatever book I’m reading comes along just in case I’m still out at a mealtime. Yes Not by choice, but if I am traveling, of course you have to eat! It's not my favorite thing to do, but I will do it if needed, if there is a restaurant I am comfortable going into alone. I would avoid upscale restaurants, and I would feel the "eating alone-ness" too much there, but a nice casual restaurant is fine.It helps to bring something to read or look at, to replace the conversation that you would normally have.

But it can also be interesting to people watch while eating alone. I find you really do meet more people when you are traveling and eating alone than when you are with someone else. You are forced to be more outgoing and not dependent on the person you are with for conversation, company and learning more about the place you are traveling to.

Well, most of the time, that is. It's also nice to have someone along to share the "did you see---" Poppet!'s Recommendations Dinner for One - Killer for Five. Der 90.

I haven't, but it seems OK In the movies, when someone is dining alone at a restaurant, they usually get embarrassed and maybe even leave. I think that in real life that isn't likely to happen unless they want or need to change those plans. I haven't eaten alone in a restaurant, but I do at home sometimes.

I don't think that there is a reason to be embarrassed, most people will not criticize you and if someone does then that is there problem. Besides, I don't believe in embarrassment because things do happen and we're only human. I do think I've come to that conclusion through experiences of my own..
