This date isn't the real birthdate of Christ in any case but the one chosen by early Christian organizers from other paegan celabrations in that time period for which to celebrate the birth of Christ. It isn't so much different as our government's decision to celbrate certain President's birthdates on days other than their real ones.

The rest of the days surrounding the 25th have different meanings to different peoples for different reasons; all of whom used this period for celebration long before Christ was ever born.

Just because a group of religious men decided one day to celebrate the birth of Christ on that particular day and that a President of the United States decided to recognize one religion above all others in a country that is supposed to treat all religions equally and NOT implicitly put the government's endorsement on a specific religion, which is what President Grant did when he made Dec 25th a Federal holiday in celebration of a solely Christian event.

December 25 marks the birth of Mithras. Since there were so many Mithraists in the Roman Empire in the 4th Century, the Christians decided to pick that day to celebrate Jesus' birth without rocking too many boats...anyway. It became a federal holiday because 98% of the country was taking that day off from work in the 1870s.

That's an unfortunate side effect of democracy. It's more about following the majority than about accomodating everyone.

Ah, political correctness. Of course it's wrong to screw with language like that in order to keep from offending people. I can practically hear people's brain's shrinking when they hypocritically use politcal correctness in order to say something that everyone already knows and understands anyway.

I am an atheist, but I still say "Merry Christmas". If you're offended by this, get over it and stop thinking the world revolves around you. If you celebrate Christmas and say "Happy Holidays" to keep from offending, I'll assume you're an anti-semite you feels guilty about it.

December 25th is a celebration of Christ's birth for Christians. That is what that day marks, so if you celebrate the day it's logical to say Merry Christmas. If you don't celebrate the day there is no point in saying anything at all.

Yes, when someone says "Happy Holidays" I think they are an annoying person who is trying to impose their views on me. I look at them and see a weak person trying to adjust to others and being foolishly tolerative.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
