Yes... if I feel that it's safe to do so. I work fairly long hours and often don't have the opportunity to get to the shops for things that I don't explicitly need to. I also purchase quite a number of fairly obscure books that it would be necessary to order if I wanted to purchase them from a real shop so it's simply more convenient to buy these things online.
Additionally, I don't have a car and it's a convenient way to order things that are heavy and I want delivered. My area of expertise is mathematics and I feel reasonably comfortable doing this is I know that the mechanism by which they are transmitted is reasonably secure. Of course any security scheme has its weaknesses and none (short of various hypothetical one time pads and some quantum encryption schemes, perhaps) is really infallible but then neither is the security system that we have in place for making real "bricks and mortar" purchases.
Indeed, I suspect that the amount of credit card fraud based around transactions of this "traditional" type might very well exceed that surrounding online purchases. To that end, I will send most of this information relatively freely (as it's freely avaiable to anyone who might want it anyway). My address and phone number can be obtained by anybody reasonably determined without undue effort.
This doesn't bother me. I will only send my credit card number and associated information across encrypted (in some reasonable fashion) connections and I mean, by that, that the transmission of the data from my machine to their server must be encrypted rather than the converse which some smaller merchants seem to feel is adequate. I've been doing this for years and have never had any problems.
I know several people who have been victims of credit card fraud and none of these instances was caused by an online transaction (and the causes were all known).
Yes I given all those things you've mentioned. However, being a victim of identity theft I have a credit card designated for the Internet, use a U.S. Post Office Box and have a few other techniques for shielding personal data along with the usual using sites that have SSL Certificates and so forth.
