We go on Christmas Eve. For about the past 10 years, we have gone to Mass on Christmas Eve. We then head to my in-laws for dinner and gift giving.
We just generally found it easier to go on Christmas Eve and have the kids get up Christmas morning and be in the PJs and open presents and play with their toys. They are old enough now that they want to go to Midnight Mass, but honestly, I can't stay up that late! We go to the 4 o'clock Mass and you have to get there around 3 to 3:10 p.m.
If you want a seat. Our parish is so big that they have a Mass in the school hall, as well. When people show up at 3:45 and there are no seats, you figure out quick that those are the people who don't normally go to Mass and didn't know the pews would be filled by then.
Funny/kind of pathetic story about last Christmas Eve. We got there about 3:10 and took a pew. My son was going to be meeting us there from work, so I put my coat on the bench next to me.
Well, even though there were many seats still available, this older woman came and sat down in the pew and moved the coat over. I told her I was saving the seat for my son, to which she replied, "he can sit there if he wants. I'm sitting here."
Pretty much meaning he would be sitting on my lap. (I never would have said this if there were no other seats available. ) THEN, a man who probably should have stayed home, sat behind us and started to cough.
I felt badly for him because you never know what someone is going through...and he did seem quite sick. Anyway, he was sitting directly behind her. She told me "I am sitting where your son was going to sit and he can sit in front of that man who is coughing all over me!
I am not getting sick! " Now, at that point, we are not able to get another pew to sit in, and it *is* church, so I can't really knock her down , so I said "My son is going to sit next to me. It is Christmas!"
Just as I was saying this he showed up. He was afraid to sit down, so he squished in next to my husband on the other end, leaving me with witchypoo to "share" this special Mass with. I had never seen her in church before, but the same thought went through my head "you never know what someone is going through" and figured there must be a reason she was so nasty.
Well, at one point when we were getting up from the pew to stand we kind of hipchecked each other. I apologized and SHE said (I am not kidding) "looks like *someone* needs to lose weight! " Well, I am so glad I wasn't the only one who heard her say that because no one would have believed that this woman, all dressed to the nines, and looking pretty was such an ugly person.
I have no idea why she went to Mass. She was miserable. So, this year, I will keep an eye out for her and if she decides to sit next to me, I will get up and run!

Not Anymore** When I was young depending upon what family I was living with, I was made to go to church or synagog with them. And that’s okay, I know they didn’t want to leave me alone ;-) As a late teen on my own, I used to find a catholic church on Christmas eve and go to it. Then on New Year’s Eve, I’d sneak into the church at night and light a candle for my mother ’cause I didn’t know where she was.As a young married person, we used to go on Christmas eve.
Now, I don’t go at all. And I feel okay about it. I have a good relationship with the BigGuy and I’ve pretty much said it all, all the time, I don’t need a special time to say it.

Not at all, unless one of them is on a Sunday My church is a little different because we don’t have special services on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve, instead families are encouraged to have private family gatherings/memorials/services. In my family, we read the Christmas story from Luke, possibly with the addition of some scriptures from the other Gospels or maybe Isaiah. This is followed by a brief discussion on the importance of Christmas, what Christmas means to you and a brief gift exchange.
When we were little this was when my sister and I would give each other our gifts and my parents might give us new pajamas (strange how if we were allowed to open a second present it was always pajamas that we were required to wear the next morning). My parents would also open the presents that my sister and I had gotten them. My mother later told me the reason for this was because my sister and I were giving much smaller gifts than my parents (and Santa) gave that this made the gifts we gave exciting and memorable instead of having the new book or puzzle overlooked in favor of the chemistry set or fish tank.
One memorable year, when I was six, my mother decided to add a Nativity reenactment to our Christmas Eve activities. While remembering this event has become part of our Christmas traditions, the reenactment itself was not repeated. I was Mary and of course nothing less than my favorite doll would be appropriate to represent the baby Jesus. My favorite doll was also my then two year old sister’s favorite doll.
She was a shepherd, with several stuffed animals to represent sheep and a little cane to be her shepherds crook, why my parents thought that was a good idea I’ll never know (they claim they don’t know). When my sister saw that I had the doll, she used her crook to hit me before she grabbed the baby and ran off and hid. When my parents found her she started screaming that she wasn't giving Baby Jesus back.

Our church has service on Christmas Eve But it depends on if we’re traveling or not. If we’re visiting friends we just go with them at whatever time suits best. When I was in Europe my favorite was always Christmas Eve service... the Dom in Trier is *stunning* by candle light.
The next most moving place I’ve seen a Christmas Eve service was in Koln. Even if you are an atheist you should take time to see these landmarks. They are breathtaking and the experience will stay with you until you die.

We always go on Christmas eve. Our entire family goes together on Christmas eve and then we open presents afterwards. Several of my children are married and have to attend Christmas with there spouse’s family on Christmas day so this works out well for them.
The rest of us get to sleep in! .
