Do you know of any good websites for free downloading of commercially unavailable music?

First thing about me is I like to buy my music in physical form, and then maybe rip it to mp3s. I think if it's available commercially, it is stealing to download it and not pay for it. But music that's not released commercially (rare tracks and live shows), if it's out there and I want to hear it, I have no qualms about downloading it, or trading for it, because I WOULD buy it if the artist and their label would put it out in stores.

I don't think of myself as an "illegal downloader" who robs the artist, because hey, if I like an artist enough to seek out their rare material, I DO buy their commercially available stuff, I go to their concerts and support them in many ways. So, as a fan, I want to hear the outtakes and demos and live tracks, but barring a way to legally buy it, it's always luck of the draw finding it. Does anyone know of good sites either artist related or general/various where I can find commercially unavailable recordings for free download?

I have 10 songs which may or may not show up on the new Guns N Roses Chinese Democracy album, but I'll buy that the day it comes out if it ever does. If I were an artist I would record all my live shows and put them and all my unreleased material on my website for cheap download, but since few to none do this, I have to seek out "bootlegs", even though I'm generally opposed to using something I didn't pay for...but I guess I'm more opposed to being denied material by my favorite artists.

And yes, if the music becomes commercially available, I do buy it even if I downloaded it previously. Couple examples...I have a bunch of rare Nirvana material, much of which was cleaned up and released in the box set, I bought the box set...yes there was material on it I didn't already have, but I would have bought the box set anyway. Same with Fiona Apple's Extraordinary Machine album...I downloaded the rough cut of that, but even though the track listing was almost exactly the same, I bought it, and in fact I liked the download version better.

2 I wish I did, I'm eager to see any answers here. I agree with you wholeheartedly about if you illegally download available music that's crap....but I remember back when Napster was around there was so much bootlegged material (especially the rare Beatles stuff) that is hard to find and very expensive, and that is why I loved Napster so much. It's too bad that at the time I didn't have a cd burner because now I really miss it.

I know in college there was also this Beatles ROIO database where you could listen to essentially hundreds of ours of beatles music from your computer by clicking on the link. I've rarely heard that stuff again (Paul singing I Want You she's so Heavy... or George Demoing the supposedly written by Ringo tune "It Don't come Easy"....just an awesome sight. Or the rare Beatles unreleased gem "Watching Rainbows" and a ton of other stuff (especially live music)I don't mind getting bootlegged material for free until it's published (and I doubt it will be published at this point since nothing has come from them post the Anthologies in 1996).

I mean why should folks who essentially stole copies of these tapes be allowed to make a ton of money on them ($30-50-a few hundred dollars per cd), if the artists get nothing. Hopefully someone knows...Thanks .

I'll only by "imports" when I see them for under $10, which happens on occassion. There was one place where I found a few Tom Waits shows, a Black Sabbath show and a few others...I have to see if I still have that bookmarked on my home computer. The other place I go to a lot is whitestripes.net, if you're a White Stripes fan, every few months they'll post another live show as a series of mp3 files.

I download them and burn them to a CD and put them on my Zune. I search bittorrents every now and then, but it would just be nice to have some specific places, because I know they're out there, just finding them is tough.

Oh that would be cool (the Beatles archive). I wonder if some digging could still find it. I know the whole bootleg thing it's like you go to a used CD store and they can get away with selling the "Imports" at $30/disc, so a 4 disc set is like $120, has all sorts of bad spots and none of the money goes to the people who made the music.

4 Try the Live Music Archive at archive.org/details/etree. These are free downloadable live recordings by artists that don't mind distributing their concerts this way. Some recordings are by audience members, others are soundboard recordings.

Billy Bragg, Calexico, the Grateful Dead, the Mekons, the Decemberists, and many many others. You won't find a lot of Top Ten artists there but the archive has plenty to keep you interested if you dig a little.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
