Well My son's doctor is very thourough and checks everything.

1 A/O, you often ask some really good questions... This would be one of them...My instincts tell me a parent should know a child's 'numbers', in theory at least, by the child's eating habits...Bad thing about that is in my looking from the outside in I don't see a lot of good eating habits out there, and more than half the kids I see are obese - actually it is extremely rare for me to see what I would call a 'normal' kid these days - weight/size-wise, I mean... Well over 90% of the kids I see are at least Overweight...So... I suspect there are a lot of really bad numbers out there, and I think parents ought to at least have a chat with the doctor about checking blood/lipid levels, blood glucose, C-Reactive Protein or Homocysteine, for example - regarding their kids. Especially if the child is at all overweight. A pediatrician once told me that a toddler being one pound overweight is like an adult being 5 pounds overweight, and the ratio example continues on up so that a 10 pound overweight child is quite a bit like an adult being 50 pounds overweight.

The problem today is that "Overweight" is the new "Normal". Fat people today don't really think of themselves as fat. When I weighed 300 pounds I had no idea I was fat... It is really astonishing (to me, as well), but it is true...In a case where "Is it enough that the pediatrician eyeballs the infant/child and takes their temperature?" is what really happens when a parent takes the child in for a 'periodic checkup" I would voice the concerns you mention, and get a new doctor if the concerns were not addressed in a serious manner.

You also ask, "Could it be that a precipitous drop in any or all of these measures of health be the cause of SIDS? Very interesting question - wish I knew what was going on in SIDS research... I hope someone is looking in this direction...People need to get serious about weight issues... Things have reached crisis proportions,no pun intended...Food for thought: Almost 99% of ALL type 2 Diabetes cases these days are SELF-INFLICTED...AND, this a way scarier disease than most people seem to realize - IF you live long enough, which is doubtful right out of the chute, they will then begin, at some point, start chopping off the victim's toes, feet and then legs, THEN the victim goes blind... Then, if still alive, the victim endures fairly lousy suffering, and then FINALLY dies... Mercifully...It is an absurd way to die, considering it didn't have to happen in the first place...And, when a parent does this to a child, (It's just my opinion, I know) the parent should go to jail, and remain there until the child is ruled once again healthy by a panel of medical experts...

2 An excellent question! Personally, I am sorry to admit that I have no idea at all what my daughters' vital signs are, though I follow both my own and my husband's. I just ask my husband, who also does not know the girls' numbers ; he sais, however, that he knows our pediatrician checks them every year or so--?

Shame on me! I'll have to look into this soon! .

AgentOrange replied to post #2: 3 A baby's blood is checked at birth. I wonder why it isn't done thereafter. I posed this question to very devoted parents of an 18 month old baby girl.

I noticed they were slathering her toast with Smart Balance margarine which is advertised as a product to lower cholesterol. Since they had no clue as to her cholesterol level, I asked them if it was wise to give her such a product to eat. Well, they no longer feed her this margarine and instead have bought organic butter.

However, they still don't know what her numbers are.
