I love potato chips but they are fattening and highly addictive. My favorite are the regular flavor of Cape Cod chips. I grew up in New York eating Wise Potato Chips - not nationally (US) available - and always considered them to be the gold standard.

But about fifteen years ago I discovered Cape Cod Potato Chips and loved them the first time I tried them. They are much thicker than regular chips - I guess Lays is the 600-pound gorilla of potato chips, and very uninteresting - and also much crunchier. The classic regular variety is my favorite but the Sea Salt & Vinegar variety is also excellent, and I suspect the others are excellent as well.

Furthermore, I have the impression that the super-thick/super-crunchy formula has spread far beyond the Cape Cod people as I have noticed that several other brands of chips seem to be of this (relatively) new genre. So there might now be other brands of chips that I would like even more than Cape Cod, but since eating potato chips is not a habit I want to cultivate, I'm not investigating the alternatives. I used to buy a bag of chips and try to make them last at least a couple of days, but now I am more realistic so when I open a bag of chips these days I figure there's not much chance I'll be able to stop until the bag is empty.

Still, I put half the contents in a bowl and make a token effort at stopping when the bowl is empty. I haven't been successful at this in about twenty years but I'll still keep trying, just to keep up appearances. At least I always buy the smallest bag I can find, and of course it's half filled with air.

For some reason I always felt that Coke or Pepsi was the perfect complement to potato chips, as milk is the perfect complement to cookies and beer is the perfect complement to pizza. I wonder if others feel the same. Coke and chips is ideal since that gives me my daily supply of both sugar and fat in a single meal, plus it gives me a running start on the carb quota too.

This is a must-buy if you like kettle chips! I only like flavored potato chips (BBQ, cheddar, etc. ) and I also like tortilla chips (Doritos and such) but I LOVE kettle chips! My new favorite chip is Utz Smokin' Sweet chips: utzsnacks.com/products/kettlechips.html They are kettle chips that are a sweet, salty, and have a VERY mild heat (I can't handle spicy foods, so it's not hot at all).

I discovered them about a year ago and they became my instant favorite. Try them if they're available in your area! Sources: My junk-food-loving opinion; utzsnacks.

I love potatoes in all forms, and chips are no exception.... I'm going to give three favourites, if that's allowed, first a standard type which has been available for years and will probably remain around for many more, then a more complicated and recent development followed by one which I'm not sure has made it out of the UK yet: McCoys crinkle cut, ready-salted are my favourite type of standard chip, consisting of a good, thick, crunchy crinkle-cut slice of potato. These are nicer than the standard thin, straight chips that you normally come across, and they're lower in fat as well! I suspect that's just because they're thicker, though, to be honest. In terms of some of the more exotic types of chip which have come out in recent years, I'm quite a fan of the Walker's sensations range, in particular the "Thai Sweet Chilli" flavour.

These are quite unusual, in my opinion, in that they've managed to break away from the stalwart, standard chip flavours to something much more interesting whilst actually making something really good. So many of the new "innovative" flavours that are available are of no more than novelty value and actually don't taste good. Finally, there's a small company in the UK making a range called "Bert's" crisps (which is what the English call the things that Americans term chips).

These are very cool. Every packet comes bearing an explanation of which particular field the potatoes were grown in and who they were (hand) fried by. They aren't as expensive as you might expect given that everything is grown (I think organically) at the farm and fried by hand.

They do a fabulous range of flavours, ranging from the traditional to some much more interesting ones. My personal favourite, and my nomination for the very best potato chips award, is their "Hot Chili Lemon" crisps. They're fantastically delicately flavoured -- they're quite spicy without being overwhelmingly hot and you can really taste the lemon.

Damn, I'm hungry now....

Any flavor made by Route 11 Route 11 is a small chip company that makes the world’s best chips! I’d thought that they might be east-coast only, but, in checking out their site for my link here, I find that they are available all over, so you’ve no excuse not to find them and try them! The chips come from a small, one-stoplight town in Virginia, and they are all hand-cooked--you can even come watch some of the process, which is cool.

Every flavor I’ve tried has been superb--light, crunchy, just plain yummy! No, I don’t work for Route 11, nor do I know anyone who does--I just love their products! Another neat thing they sell (but it’s harder to find in stores, so you might want to order them from their site): potato chip cookies!

I thought that sounded really weird when I first saw them, but I trusted the brand, and my curiosity got the better of me, so I tried them--and they were delicious! In fact, they were so good that I tried making a couple of on-line potato chip cookie recipes, but I couldn’t duplicate the Route 11 version well at all. And yes, their small factory is actually on Route 11.
