Here's the deal Corky 1. You aren't guaranteed 20 years. In fact you aren't guaranteed anything past your initial enlistment.
Less than 10 percent of all brand new Recruits will ever see 20+ years. 2. The "average" enlisted retiree, in any branch, is an E7 with 22 years of service 3.
Less than 5% will make E8 and 1% or less will make E9. There is only one Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps and that's a appointed position. Your chances of ever making that are astronomical and it's going to take significantly longer than 20 years Bottom line.
Focus on actually meeting the requirements to enlist. Which 80% of your peers don't Then worry about your first 4 years.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
