Do you think having a GPS nav system in your car hampers you in figuring out directions on your own without GPS?

I was thinking that same thing on Thursday! Just like Spell Check hampers our ability to spell. Anyway, I was going to a job interview in the city...all one way streets.

Whenever I had to make a left turn, I was in the right lane, so I went in the circle the wrong way. My GPS kept saying "Recalculating route. Go to...." Then nothing.

I got an error message when I looked at it. I pulled into a parking lot and tried to reset it with no luck. I thought to myself "I have NO CLUE where I'm at!"

It was like the map in my head had coffee spilled on it. After some aimless driving, I pulled into a place with a guard to ask directions, and when I showed him the address, he said I was there.

1 Meh, no, not really. I wouldn't dare venture out to new places without my GPS. Once you go there once or twice, you probably won't need the GPS anymore because you'll have remembered it.

And then you'll know the area somewhat and figure out where you are and what else is around you. Or at least that's how it is with me! .

2 No, can still do it by ourselves, but a GPS takes a lot of stress out of the driving for my daughter when we hire a car from Hertz in the US to drive around and I don't need to be map reading, but enjoying the sights instead. She now has one for driving in the UK and Europe.

3 It cuts out what you learn about the local roads in the time you spend lost on them. I'll pass on that particular knowledge. I suppose there may come a day when people don't learn to read a paper map, and that would be a shame.

But a GPS is much easier to use if you've already got map-reading skills. If anything, GPSes will incorporate more map-like features in the future.

4 Heck no! It saves gas and arguments. We all know men will NOT ask for directions or listen to the their wife who saw the flippin right exit sign and he won't admit he is wrong and ends up driving 20 miles north to go 2 miles south. So, with GPS, it makes life easier.

It certainly helped when we drove to Italy and was a lifesaver when looking for a parking garage and an Esso gas station that took NATO coupons. Have you ever dared to drive in Rome, Naples or Catania? Let me tell ya, you can't see half the signs, the rules of the road are well, nonexistent and its worse than being stuck in the game Frogger on super hard level.

Thank God, I at least learned to first drive a car in Italy or I would have lost my mind. If I am driving to some place new and I am by myself, I can't be bothered by stopping to look at a map to find something. I like the way my GPS "Francine" tells me where to go, where the speed cameras are and what the speed limits are.

Francine saves my nerves by rerouting due to traffic jams, construction and weather. If you want to read a map, go ahead. You should know how to do it.

But, a GPS is a time saver, gas saver and a sanity saver. (wow..does that not sound like an advertisement for Navigon or what?)this is a vespa cam in naples...on a SLOW dayhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJG9uIHCRrk&feature=relatedthis must have been during riposa as this is not the catania I drove in the week before last ..mind the italian swearing:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YsN6b3bmM4 .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
