Whatever strikes your fancy! That's what I love so much about Askville's open avatar policy. As Madonna would say "Exxxpress Yourself!
" You gotta vogue your way through Askville and strut whatever your personality feels like. Is it a Yosemite Same is your vogue for the day, then go with it. If it's... an image of Norman Mailer, a storm cloud, a killer bunny, a purple spiral, a picture of your beautiful self, a shoe, a dragon, or a toothless green blobby guy with a Santa hat....you gotta do your thing!
Much better than preset avatars that give you a handful of clothing options and think this makes you unique! I'm always impressed and proud of the amount of uniqueness and creativity I see around Askville's avatar community.
I think we should use what are we are most comfortable with. I have a thing for cats and dragons so my avatar is a pair of dragons. I will probably change it to a at later and then back.

I think you should use whatever avatar you like. I think it is your personal choice what type of avatar you use. I do think people should use avatars...I tend to maybe answer more questions from people who have avatars and not just the default little avatar guy icon.
I do like avatars that may something about the persons personality.
It's about expression To limit what people choose for their "photo", in any way, would be a detriment to the Askville community. Part of the fun of Askville, and basically all other community sites on the web is the freedom of self expression. I think a lot of self-expression takes place in the selection of a profile photo.
Some people want to establish a professional presence, and put up photos that you would expect to see next to their names in a newspaper column. Others want to show how fun they are, and put up photos of the time they passed out at the frat party a few months ago. Others choose symbols to summarize who they are.
Whether you choose the scales of justice, the yin-yang symbol or a $100 bill, you are telling people a lot about who you are. Keeping the options open with regard to what people are allowed to choose for their profile photos helps to keep the community rich and alive with self-expression. (This coming from a guy that doesn't even have a profile photo yet...I wonder what THAT means...) .
Whatever you want YuLiQigong, I have to admit your avatar with the hands did freak me out a little bit :-) I think people should use whatever they are comfortable with. If you want to use your real photo, great. I like landscapes of mountains and snow, lightning, old crumbling castles/ruins, cemeteries, stonehenge, etc. My current avatar is a Gothic Lolita costume that I designed and made for my best friend.
I might use my real photo eventually. Animated avatars are OK but some can get distracting.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
