An apple a day.... As a dentist who has seen the onslaught of decay caused by juice in kids AND adults, I would suggest you eat the apple instead. There are no real "health benefits" in apple juice! The vitamin C that is added acts as a preservative.
What you get with juice is a sugar hit! The fiber and other useful nutrients are removed when you're not eating the apple! Also note that a glass of apple juice (or orange juice, or carrot juice, etc) is composed of way more fruits/ veggies than you would ever consume.
Would you ever eat 5 apples or oranges in a sitting? This creates a sugar hit in your system ( not just your teeth) that causes insulin to have to be released. Think about it- what do you give a diabetic when they are having low blood sugar?
Orange juice! Because you want to get their blood sugar up really fast! Your'e better off eating real food instead of consuming liquid sugar in the form of juice!
If you want real health benefits, eat the fruit ( or veggie) and drink water, that way you get the soluble fiber and the energy of the whole food. Sources: personal and professional experience .
Contratrate has more of everything... .. because it is concentrated it has more of everything... more vitamins, more nutrients, more sugar, more everything. That is if you drink it concentrated... you water it down you return it back to its unconcentrated state. Ha.Really... I beleive that the contration is done with heat and that can change or degrade some vitamins and such so I would venture to say that the best juice (healthwise) is freshly squeezed from the fruit itself. It is basically a tall refreshing glass of cytoplasm and so it should still be "alive" when you drink it.
I would recommend you get a high quality juicer and make your own if you are really interested in the most healthy drink. Get organic apples... wash then with anti-baterial soap and a brush before you use them (to remove/kill e-coli, etc). Feed them into your juicer and drink... Sources: Personal Knowledge .
Yes Apple juice concentrate is pretty much just apple juice with the water removed. In the concentration process you lose a few tasty flavor molecules, but the important phenolics, minerals, and vitamins remain unchanged. But check the dates.
Both 100% apple juice and frozen apple juice concentrate gradually lose some of their benefits; one study showed a significant loss in free amino acids (but interestingly, an increase in the antioxidant phenolics) after storage for 4 months.
It depends... I'd imagine that it would depend on the quality of the water used to dilute the concentrate, for one thing. And of course you'd want to confirm that no sweeteners or anything else that you object to has been added - it's always important to read the ingredients! And it's important to check the label for the country(ies) of of origin as well.
I recently read a news story that said that virtually ALL concentrated apple juices sold in the USA (including almost all kid's juice boxes which include any apple concentrate, i.e. Most of them) contain apple juice concentrate from China. They've been underselling US providers. So you'll have to decide how you feel about that.
A lot of lead and other poisons that have been found in products from China in the past year or two, despite very lax safety enforcement by the Administration. How much more contamination would have been discovered under a proper inspection regimen, I wonder? Personally, I've switched my son to cranberry juice cocktail with no apple juice content at all - and nothing from China.
I have a gut feeling that within a year or two we'll discover that some juices from China are contaminated with something toxic. Sources: Reading and research .
1 JayD, regarding your answer "Contratrate has more of everything...":I often comment on my own answers... ha. The apple juice we use in a can you mix with two full cans of water. So the concentrate has 3x the vitamins and nutrients than reconstituted juice.
This doesn't really consider any degradation of those chemicals because of heating, freezing, etc. The concentrate is a bit rich for my tastes though. I dilute it first... we use RO water (reverse osmosis) in our house so very pure.My family regards tap water as poisonous... we don't drink with it or cook with it--only flush with it and bathe with it.
