Boy, I hope Joecseko sees this! Yes, people overuse the "random crap" category, I agree. It's certainly not the only overused category, and it's certainly not the worst category to abuse, but it is desperately overused.

I think the problem is with the definition. What is random crap? To me, I think it's a category that should contain the really odd, no right answer kind of questions.

It should be shorthand for " I'm a weird question. I didn't fit into any other category well! " There are lots of questions that are food questions, or health questions, or television questions or other perfectly not random crap questions that get thrown into random crap.

Usually, the question is otherwise appropriately categorized...the "random crap" category was just thrown in to a final topic space. Is this a problem? Well, it does make it hard to keep track and find the really random questions, if that's what you're interested it.

I don't bother to watch the random crap topic even though I really enjoy odd-ball questions, because the topic is just way too full of other stuff...real questions, if you will. It also unfairly awards people with experience in random crap when they don't "deserve" it. I don't mind this too much for the "random crap" topic, since I doubt anyone is all that impressed by someone being an expert in "random crap".

It doesn't carry the weight of say, being an expert in "computers" or "science"...something that has a real meaning to it. However, since "random crap" is not the only topic being diluted, I'm going to take a stand and say that like all other topics, "random crap" shouldn't be used inappropriately. Additionally, it lets people level up too fast and start raking in big bonuses.

I'm a L3 in random crap! And, that doesn't even get me into the top 10 of the topic leaders! I'm not one who is overly rankled by the overuse of the "random crap" topic.

Yes, I do notice it, and I wish there was a way to fix it up, but I don't let it greatly affect my enjoyment of the site. The only time when it really bothers me is when a person chooses random crap in place of appropriate topics, for example, a recipe request that has "random crap" but doesn't have "recipes" or "food" as topics.

Good question, fishman Random crap does contain a wide variety of questions, mainly those that don't seem to fit in elsewhere. Sometimes it's very difficult to categorize a question you might want to ask. Or, it's a "weird" question, merely speculative about an opinion, like this question.

Another possibility is that the asker really doesn't understand all the categories, and so puts it in this general category for lack of anything better. What does it hurt? To be a leader in random crap merely means you know a little bit about a lot of things.

It could be considered a trivia kind of category, but hey, it's 2007 and we need to update that name/concept! And trivia doesn't really cover opinions, either. So we really need this kind of category!

Maybe it's the name that bothers you, or the ambiguity of it? That's actually the joy of random crap--it can be anything, pretty much! One man's random crap is another man's theory of life question.

Who can better decide what a question should be classified than the person who is asking the question, especially when it's kind of an ambiguous question like this one? You might say the question should be in a totally different category, but it's the asker who knows what the intent of the question is and how they would classify it. To be open and maintain free flowing discussions, we have to be able to interpret our category selections ourselves.

I'm glad you took the time to ask this question to help clarify things. We each have our own definition of voting, of topic selection, and of everything else here. Askville staff itself is the only one that can really do anything about that, if it's done "wrong" and they don't seem to be doing anything about it.

There are some questions that are obviously placed in the wrong topic, or are misspelled, but in random crap--it's all self-definition! That's the beauty of it! It's my favorite category, as I like to answer a wide variety of questions and there are always some unusual and fun ones there.

Not only too all inclusive, but entirely overused! How can every question be an anomalous bowel movement? It can't.

It seems like every time someone needs to add a topic, they add random crap or Askville. That makes absolutely no sense, especially the Askville topic. I had an issue with someone just about a week or so ago.

He always includes random crap in the topics of every question, whether a reference question or whimsical question. After I "confronted him" in the discussion, he claimed random crap was a subjective topic and should encompass everything. Well, no it shouldn't.

I was on Askville when that topic was first created. The first question was "What's in my back pocket? " or something of that nature.

The idea was that random crap were questions that really had no real answer. They were supposed to be funny. Tat seems to have gone by the wayside now and most people just add it to get five answers for the coins.

That's not right to do with any topic, especially topics where experience points mean something (as much as they can mean). If people want a lot of exposure for their questions, they should add those topics after the question is submitted. That way experience points aren't given out in topics where they shouldn't be.

Topics aren't meant for people to game the system with by getting five answers to their questions. The entire Askville infrastructure, the coins bonuses, levels for superpowers, application of superpowers and many other things all focus around the topics and the resulting experience points. Many of us are hoping for a better way to control the topics so that Askville doesn't fall apart at the seems, while other people just rip them apart to either game the system, or just to be disagreeable.

So yes, it's too all inclusive, it's lost it's original meaning and is used entirely too often! Sources: My Epinion! .

Yes most of life is random crap. It seems like a lazy way and is just a catch all category. Might as well be "Other".

Absolutely -- this category betrays that the asker didn't expend the energy necessary to choose one more specific.

" "Missing! King Of Random Crap's turtle is gone! Where did it go?

" "This "random crap," is it truly random? Wouldn't it be more accurate to say "arbitrary crap"? " "Does anyone else have the personal opinion that the category bot is a bunch of random crap?

Missing! King Of Random Crap's turtle is gone! Where did it go?

I am now Level 3 in "random crap". Is that good?

He has reached the 6th level of Random Crap!

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
