Edison Arantes do Nascimento, Pele, is widely regarded as the greatest football player ever. He is a national hero in his native Brazil for his achievements and his footballing exploits. He is believed to have scored 1194 goals in his playing career from 1956 to 1977.
He was born in 1940 and in 1954 joined the Baquinho boys' team. At the age of fifteen, he joined the Santos FC junior team, playing for one season before joining the senior team. Pele made his debut for Santos in 7 September 1956, scoring one goal in a 7–1 friendly victory over Corinthians.
He was the topscorer in the league in 1957 at the age of 16 and earned a call to the Brazil national team. He played 17 years for Santos winning numerous titles before retiring in 1972. Despite his retirement he still played for Santos in some official matches.In 1975, he signed with the New York Cosmos, where he became NASL champion in 1977.
He is believed to have increased significantly the interest and awareness of football in the US. Pepe started his international career on on 7 July 1957 by scoring against Argentina in a 2-1 loss. He became the youngest player to score in an international march at 16 years and 9 months.
He played in the 1958 World Cup scoring the only goal in the quarterfinal, 3 in the semis and 2 in the finals with Brazil winning 5-2. He played in 4 World Cups from 1958 to 1970, winning 3: 1958, 1962 and 1970. He did not play a major part in the 1962 campaign as he was injured in the first match itself.
Pele is now a football ambassador for FIFA and participates in the major football events to increase the interest for the sport. He is very active and is also very close to his old club, Santos. When Robinho signed for Santos from Manchester City in 2010, Pele went to welcome Robinho back.
Considered to be the best ever soccer player of all-time, Pele showed the world what is the meaning of brilliance. Pele boasts off 4 world cup appearances and 3 of which helped the Brazilian national soccer team to three World Cup Crowns. Pele retired from playing competitive soccer in 1977 and eventually became a sporting ambassador. He was named as a Minister of Sports in Brazil and an endorser of Pepsi Cola. He is presently active in business, charities and promotional endeavors.
He is currently running his own coffee company the, Pele Coffee. He also does some commentating jobs on soccer games and in 2001 he inked a deal as a Pan American Sports Network analyst. He is also earning an estimated $30 million from endorsements and his business.
