I'm still trying to figure out what the crime is. Manning released information that had been hidden from the American people. Why was it hidden?
Because it would embarrass the military, the politicians, the cabinet, and some of our so-called allies. All the folderol about lives at risk was just exaggeration and hooey to scare us, like so many other scare tactics used over the last 10 years. Manning maybe, possibly, should be in trouble for downloading some files.
But the rest of it - treason, and so on - is a complete crock. And for the US to treat an army captain so poorly, keeping him in solitary confinement, is itself an indictment of how low we have sunk. Shameful shameful.
PJ Crowley spoke the truth. He was canned. Shameful.
He has not even been convicted of the crime he is accused of. Rhine44 13 months ago .
He hasn't even been tried. Even more shameful.
That makes freedom of speech a mockery. Lines zig zag all over the place in the sand concerning 'freedom of speech'. As far a I can tell we have our heads up our asses if we think we are defending the right aspects of this freedom.
Congress will defend rape by calling is 'elective' sex, (off topic but it makes me really mad), we will defend a person's right to throw a sheet over his head and threaten blacks, but throw this man in jail because he chose to do something we all wanted when we voted in 2008, more transparency. Sheer madness. And I agree with ElBandito....we should be ashamed.
I am so tired of being ashamed of this country.
He told us the truth about Iraq and now he realizes, nobody really cares and he's screwed. Ah youth.
I don't believe we know what he downloaded or if it was more than just embarrassing information.
Private Manning seems to have admitted he broke the law, actually seems to have bragged about it. He will be tried in a court of law, probably a military court. There have been reports in major newspapers - real newspapers, not blogs, not HuffPost, etc. - that some of the data he copied contained names of people who secretly provided helpful information.....people who wanted America's enemies defeated, people who wanted freedom for their countries.
There were people who screamed about the release of Valerie Plame's name as a CIA agent. Some of those same people don't seem to care that Private Manning's release of documents identifying agents helpful to the US is far worse than identifying Plame as CIA. Plame became ineffective as a secret agent, if secret agent was the role she had in the CIA.
The agents in the Middle East could face being hunted down and killed, and having their entire families killed. I'll reserve judgment about Private Manning's guilt: I know very little about his actions. I will not reserve judgment on the people who let a private - A PRIVATE - have access to secret information.
Foolish! .
That's for the judge to decide, tho technically, he could be executed.

The drug use as crime requiring punishment.
I'm looking for a financial crime that I can use in my novel.
Are there any good true crime books arriving soon, financial crime etc.
Is violent crime always more damaging than white collar crime.
O.J. arrested without bail. Do you think he will get away with another crime?

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
