In a way, it is related. Economics deals with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services within a society. That society might be a single state, a country, or the entire world.
Home economics relates because it deals with the home as an independent economy. Home economics also deals with theories and systems to best manage those attributes. Unlike economics, though, home economics generally deals with things beyond money and the distribution of goods.
Home economics also covers cooking, hygiene, child care, and family relationships. Sex ed and drug awareness, as well as eating disorders and other mental health issues, can also be covered. Home economics is geared towards developing a successful, happy, and constructive home environment, rather than simply observing how different familial units operate.
Home economics is generally very hands-on, focusing on applicable life skills rather than abstract theories. Although the two fields are related, they are not closely related. For that reason, home economics is often referred to as “family and consumer sciences†to eliminate confusion.
