Daesh's version of Islam has been described as the most literal translation of the Koran imaginable, dating from the seventh century. In that respect their Islam could be described as 'pure'. It's a bit like having Christian fundamentalists living according to the edicts of the Book of Leviticus which similarly prescribe how people should live their lives in incredible detail and 'crimes' for which they should be put to death.
One of these edicts is the basis for fundamentalists' opposition to homosexuality. Islam has moved away from the 'pure' form over the centuries to an extent that depends on different influences in different countries; influences such as colonial rule. Thus we have countries like Saudi Arabia which has retained Shariah Law (but not in such a barbaric from as Daesh) right through to secular countries like Turkey where homosexuality was legalized decades before any Christian country.
There are many flavours of Islam. If Daesh's form is the purist it is still the most unpalatable.
ISIS and other groups follow the extremist Wahhabi Islam. You would not say that the Westboro Baptist Church was Christian just because they seem to be. Most Muslims do not follow this lunatic fringe of Islam.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
