Right now when you use the WIFI iPad, it will only use WIFI hotspots to find your location, which will be somewhat less than accurate. This is also true if you are using MyFi. With the 3G ipad, the iPad can use the cell phone towers around you to find your location in a more accurate way.
Basically, you need 3G if you want a more accurate GPS location, WIFI, using MyFi or not, will still only use hot spots because regardless, you are still only using WIFI. So your best bet is, that if you want to use the GPS to the best of its capabilities, get the iPad 3G. But, if you have an iPhone, I would personally just stick with that and save the extra $130 you will spend on the iPAd 3G as well as the monthly data usage.
I have both the iPhone and the iPad, and I couldn't see using the iPad in my car as a GPS. It is too big to use while driving. That is my opinion though.
Hope this helps.
The wifi version has pseudo-GPS capabilities through Skyhook Wireless, but this is only useful if you're connected to a stationary wifi hotspot. For all practical purposes, it doesn't have true GPS. If you turn off the 3G radio in the iPad 3G, you won't be able to use GPS either, since A-GPS requires a cell phone signal to acquire location data.
That said, I've had some limited success in urban areas (e.g. , while riding in the back of a taxi cab), with my wifi iPad tethered to my phone -- the iPad detects nearby wifi signals and can triangulate its location through Skyhook Wireless. It doesn't quite update in real time (and you can't get velocity data or direction from it), but it will give you a decent estimate of where you are. I'm pretty sure this setup wouldn't work for driving directions though.
It's not accurate nor fast enough, and if you're in a suburban or rural area without other wifi access points, the iPad won't be able to locate you, regardless of whether you're connected to the MyFi or not. Maybe in the 2nd gen iPad they will add real GPS chips to both versions (in addition to front and rear facing cameras). Of course I guess increased cost may be the deciding factor there. Apple doesn't dare eat into that massive profit margin.
You know, I've been really wondering for a long time if it had actual true GPS. Thank you for clearing this up for me! Even with the 3G radio turned off, gps still works for the 3G iPad.
Now It may not be assisted gps (a-gps), but it's plenty fast at finding your location and keeping lock. Useful as there are many apps that allow you to download portions of maps for offline use, or something like copilot live or tom-tom.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
