This came up at dinner over the weekend (oops, bad choice of words). We had corn on the cob. I eat it horizontally, like a typewriter -- go all the way across and then move to the left side of the next row down and eventually work my way around the cob.
My daughters eat vertically; the go all the way around the cob in a circle, then move a mouth over, and do another circle, and so on. In the end, all the corn is eaten (and fine sweet corn it was! ) but our different approaches struck me as odd.
It can't be genetic, because they're my kids. Is there a right way? How do you gnaw?

My unique way: As far as I know, NOBODY eats corn the way I do. I go horizontally, but I extract the kernals with my teeth row by row, precisely. As a result, I get a lot more out of an ear of corn than anyone else I know, and I don’t get those cellulose bits stuck between my teeth.
Basically I just use my lower front teeth to dig under each row and pop out the whole kernals (into my mouth, of course). Here’s a photo of an ear of corn that I had almost finished: As you can see, there’s just one clean row of kernals left. Just in case it isn’t obvious how much neater this method is than the usual way of eating corn, here’s that corn cob (with the final row removed) next to a couple of corncobs that had been eaten the traditional way by my son: See how much cleaner and emptier the sockets are?
I don’t remember how I got started eating corn this way, but I’ve been doing it for a long time. It’s really effortless, and I probably get twice as much out of an ear of corn than anyone else does! Sources: Experience .
I don't know the etiquette for eating corn on the cob BUT: As far as I am concerned your daughters are right only because I eat it the same way. It would be interesting to find out if there was a psychological significance in the method used. Same as where do you place the first bite of a piece of sliced bread and do you peel off the edges.

1 I eat it horizontally, my husband eats it vertically. I had never seen anyone eat it vertically until I saw him eat it that way. It was weird to me at first, now it doesn't matter as long as he likes it!

3 Definitely vertically. That somehow feels more complete to me. You can gain momentum as you turn the cob.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
