External hard-disks. How reliable do you think they are? I have two used two "well known" brands and both of them have let me down.Is it worth buying another one?

We have a Maxtor 250gb external running 24/7 for about four years. Still working. The WD Drive not so good.

The Maxtor drive is on a network, it is never shut down. The Western Digital (WD) external is a 1tb drive which began exhibiting problems three months ago, it runs hot and then cannot be accessed. It is being returned to the mfg.

For replacement. I have another external drive (60gb) that was originally IN an older PC, we bought a USB case for it and it is still percolating along. There is also an Iomega external that runs 24/7 for the past three years, no URL1 may have to do with the position of the drive.

Some hard drives cannot be turned on their sides, they become spastic. Exactly what are the two drives doing or not doing as the case maybe.? .

3 It's just luck of the draw really. Some people have good luck with one brand so they think they are more reliable, other people will have that brand fail within a few months. Every hard drive will fail at some point, guaranteed.

Just a matter of when. If you're using it for backup it's definitely worth getting another one. You don't want your primary drive to fail and have no backup.

4 An external disk drive is the same as an internal one, in a different enclosure. It's literally the same drive inside. Desktop drives aren't meant to be jostled, so maybe you're just moving it too much, though they should stand ordinary abuse.As the others have said, you may have just had bad luck.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
