The apocalypse means not having to set your alarm clock Everybody loves prophets of doom. We've had them forever. Every religion has one, even the Jews, who leave most of their eschatology to a few mystics but still bring it up every Passover when they open the door for Elijah, who's supposed to presage the Messiah.
The early Christians thought they had their Messiah. In fact, the Roman Jews found lots and lots of potential Messiahs. Jesus obviously didn't end the world the first time, but the Christian religion started off convinced that the end of the world was coming pretty much right now."Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who shall not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom (Matthew 16:28, Mark 9:1, Luke 9:27)".
They've kind of had to spin that particular statement, but the whole religion started off with an apocalyptic bent that it never really lost. People have been calculating and re-calculating the date ever since. A Brief story of the Apocalypse cites literally hundreds of them.
Some Christian sects are more apocalyptic than others, and a serious attachment to it usually earns you cult status, but it's not far from the mainstream. Interior Secretary James Watt famously said, "We don't have to protect the environment, the Second Coming is at hand." That, I think illustrates the reason for it all.
People want to believe that the end of the world is nigh because it relieves them of responsibility to do hard things. Christian Messianism comes from Jewish Messianism, which was a reaction to the Roman occupation. They believed that the Chosen People would not be allowed to suffer much longer, so they seized on predictions that It Will All Be Over Soon.
We don't have anything nearly that bad to complain about, but there is grief in all of our lives, lurking under the surface even on our happiest days. We miss those who are gone and long to see them again. It's where the story of Heaven comes from, and also the reason we seek the end of the world, so that the hard part will all be over. Western civilization is colored by the Jewish and Christian messianic ideas, but nearly all other religions are also expecting the end Real Soon Now.
The Lakota are waiting for the White Calf Buffalo Woman. The Norse figured Ragnarok is due. The ndus figure that it all gets wiped out every four billion years or so (and life has been on earth for right about four billion years).
It can even be simple wishful thinking. Many religions promise your rewards after death, rather than in life, but skipping to the end is always a no-no. The Islamic Fundamentalists seem to have figured out a way around that particular injunction by engaging in pointless and cruel attacks that do not serve their political ends at all.
They use suicide attacks even though remote-controlled attacks would be a better use of resources. They've found a way to shortcut their apocalypse. If you can't skip to the end, you can at least hope that the end is coming soon.
It helps a lot of people get through dreary days to think that if you're lucky, the moon will go out and the seas will turn to blood..
Pretty sensational statement...... You throw a statement like that out there and its gonna attract a lot of attention. In this case I believe the main voice behind this claim is Harold Camping. This is his second try at predicting the end of the world.
The first time, he said it was gonna be in 1994. He also wrote a book about it called 1994?. This time he redid the math and came up with 2011.
He also wrote another book about it in 2005 called Time Has An End. There are two other knuckleheads that I'm aware of to a lesser extent by the names of Johan Calleman and Ronald Weinland. Camping unlike the other two has much greater influence because he owns several radio stations that come under the umbrella name of Family Radio.
He has been broadcasting Bible studies over the radio for at least 40 years, therefore he has a huge following. He has a strong presence in the Philadelphia which is where I'm from and can be found on the radio several times a day. Unfortunately, Camping is misguided in his biblical teachings and can come across as very knowledgeable to the biblically unaware.
Camping is into numerology and likes to crunch numbers with the number 13 which helped him arrive with the year 2011. I also believe he (I haven't read either of his books which I will never do) is misusing the Book of Daniel Chapter 8 to aid in his prophetic statements. People have been expecting Gabriel to blow his horn any time for years now. It is odd that so many people seem to look forward to the end of the earth isn’t it? Large groups of people have actually sold or given away all that they owned and have gone to wait on a mountain for the end that never quite comes when they expect it.
People are always telling me how bad things are in the world now and that that is a sign of the end but I have a history degree and I know better. I live in an area that was overrun by outlaws posing as soldiers during the Civil War and I can tell you on good authority that times were much worse here then than they are now. Sure things are bad in places but it’s no worse than it has been in times past.
I say enjoy life. As a believer I think that God gave me this life and he didn’t intend for me to walk around in sackcloth and covered in ashes looking for the end. He put me here to try and make things better and if we would all do that maybe things wouldn’t be so bad after all.
Some people I suppose just have to believe that every silver cloud has a dark lining.
BS If you read the newspapers and watch TV, it looks like the world is going to hell in a handbasket. But if you walk down the street and meet your neighbors, the world is a pretty nice place. No one knows when the end will be.
If someone foretells the end, you can bet they are wrong. So: The milenium came and went a thousand years ago. Which was the antichrist?
Muhammad? Stalin? Khan?
Take your choice. Or maybe one yet to come. What is so special about 2011?
The end of the world is like lightning. If you see it or hear it, it missed. So forget it and enjoy living..
The only way they can justify their faith is by hoping the end is arriving soon, to prove to others, and even themselves that they made the right choice. If they die before "the end" they'll never know if they picked the right faith or not.

A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
