Ok, some places are easier to be out in than others. As a rule of thumb, cities are often more gay-friendly than small towns. Conservative towns/provinces are less friendly than liberal ones.
That said, some of the things that you are worried about --harassment by random people, when buying groceries, and going about day to day business-- tend to come up a lot when you are coming out. The safety issue is going to be on your mind as you start to come out. It isn't so much of a concern once you have been out for a year or two.
Essentially, you start feeling unsafe when you realize that you are not quite like other people. Human instinct lumps people into "my kind" and "not my kind". You lose your feelings of safety when you hit the "not my kind" stage.
As you get more used to being gay, and realize that you aren't any different from who you were before you came out, you feel less alienated, and more safe. Being around gay people helps when you are first coming out. Later, you don't have to be with other gay people.
Just other people who you care about. It gets better. Trust me.
Finally, yes, I feel safe in public. There are places that I probably wouldn't go to have a public makeout session with a same-sex partner. There are people that I deliberately do not tell.
That said, day to day stuff is no problem. Talking with other LGBT friends, including several who are "flaming", no one has had problems. We live in a moderately sized, though conservative city.
Good luck.
It's never been a prob for me ...... but once in a while you still hear about gays being rolled even in big "gay friendly" cities. So.......I'm mainstream but maybe I watch myself leaving clubs or baths late at night -- depending on how "feminine" you "evolve" you'll probably just want to use some common sense and keep a low profile in some situations.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
